IMS Softball Holds Huskies in Check

Leah Bontrager

IMS played outstanding defense through four innings at Highland last Monday night. In the first inning, Leah Bontrager struck out two of the three batters she faced. In the first and second innings, Suzanna Yoder threw out two quick runners from shortstop and Bontrager handled two bunts flawlessly. In the third inning, Yoder made a diving catch on a soft liner and doubled off the lead-off runner on second to snuff out a scoring threat. Later in the inning and with the bases loaded, Yani Gutierrez retrieved a wild pitch from the backstop and threw to Bontrager to tag a runner at the plate and end the inning. Throughout the first four innings, Highland scored no runs and managed only one hit. IMS got on the board first in the top of the fifth when Gutierrez led off with a clean single up the middle. Meredith Blossom advanced Gutierrez to second by hitting to the right side, Norah Yoder walked to put runners at first and second, and Esther Hughes bunted and reached on an error to load the bases with only one away. S. Yoder grounded sharply up the middle. The Highland shortstop gloved the ball, stepped on second for a force out to get Hughes, but an overthrow at first allowed Gutierrez and N. Yoder to score. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Highland got on the board with a lead-off single followed by a walk and two well-executed squeeze bunts to score three runs. A deep fly ball to Rubye Ney in center field plated a fourth. The final run of the inning scored on a fielder’s choice. IMS continued to put pressure on Highland with two singles in the seventh, but couldn’t manage to score. Highland scored three in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a lead-off homerun, to end the game 8-2.

IMS outhit Highland 6-4. Ney and Hughes each went 2-3. S. Yoder singled and had two RBI. Bontrager took the loss for IMS, striking out two and allowing only four hits.
