1A State Qualifier at Central City May 10, 2019
The Iowa Mennonite girls track and field team recorded seven personal best performances in thirteen entries at the 1A state qualifier in Central City Friday night. All state qualifier meets were postponed one day due to unfavorable weather conditions Thursday. Friday’s weather was nearly ideal. The winner of each event automatically qualifies for the state meet next week in Des Moines. The next best fourteen performances from the ten 1A state qualifier meets also qualify for the state meet. Suzanna Yoder had the school’s highest placing of the night placing second in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.02. She has competed in this event at the state meet the last two years. This is a new personal best time for Suzanna in the 400. Ava Hughes also competed in the 400-meter dash running 1:41.08 in her final high school race. Yoder placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in another personal best time of 27.47. Mackenzie Gutierrez broke the 30 second barrier for the first time in her career in the event. She ran it in 29.61 to place ninth. Leah Bontrager also had a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:34.8 is a new personal best. Yoder placed sixth in the 100-meter dash in 13.29. Gutierrez also raced the 100 meters running a career-best time of 14.06 for tenth place. “Mackenzie saved her best two races of her high school career for her final meet.” Bontrager came in seventh in the 1500 meter run in 5:35.95. Ainsley Shaw placed eighth in the 3000-meter run. Sarah Miller and Malia Sedlacek threw the shot put 25 feet 2 inches and 23 feet nine inches respectively. Sedlacek’s throw was a personal best. Sarann Durflinger threw the discus 61 feet 11 inches which is her new best throw. Miller best throw on the night was 58 feet 3 inches.
Aaron Hershberger represented the boy’s team at the state qualifier meet. He ran personal best times in both hurdle races. He placed fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles in 17.48. He placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.72.
