Teacher Feature – Mike Wagner

Mike Wagner

If you’ve followed our Facebook account this year, you’ve probably noticed some great videos of our choirs practicing in the foyer. Our foyer has great acoustics and showcases what our new choir director, Mike Wagner, has been teaching our students. We welcome Mike as he begins his first year teaching at IMS! We wanted you all to get to know him a little more so you will grow to like him as much as we do.

Mike grew up in Coralville and attended West High. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Luther College. He teaches Chorale, Concert Choir, Symphonic Band, AP Music Theory, and Introduction to Music. He served as a head counselor at The Royal School of Church Music in St. Louis this past summer. For his summer fun, he also enjoyed spending time with family and friends watching movies, playing video games and just relaxing after his graduation from Luther.

Mike says he has had several wonderful choir directors in his past who have pushed him to be his absolute best. He hopes to do the same for his students.  For Mike, faith and music have always been intertwined. He joined his church’s youth choir when he was in 2nd grade and he has been singing ever since. His choir director was fond of saying, “When you sing, you pray twice,” and Mike has really taken that to heart and hopes to express it in his classroom.

Mike is looking forward to so many things this year including going to the Mennonite Schools Council Choir Festival with the Touring Choir. His one word to describe IMS would be “community”. He says, “Everyone here is so close-knit and I love how there aren’t the normal cliques that tend to appear in high school.”

For his free time, Mike says, “I enjoy nerdy things, Star Wars, Marvel, video games, the whole nine yards.” His favorite Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 14:15, “I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also.” We appreciate Mike’s passion for his faith and workµare glad that Mike has joined the IMS community!
