IMS Principal Search Committee Update

The Principal Search Committee for Iowa Mennonite School (IMS) has been actively involved in a two-fold listening process. One aspect of the listening process was an online survey. In addition to the survey, in-person listening sessions were scheduled. The intention of both aspects of the listening process was to reach as many persons as possible who are devoted to IMS and its future.

The outcome of the two-fold listening process was to give shape to the Principal Profile that will be used in recruiting the next IMS principal. Conversation summaries from the listening groups were compared and contrasted with survey findings to achieve this goal.


The survey was shaped by the committee. It was forwarded through Theresa Blossom, Director of Finance, to all who are included in the IMS network including IMS website and social media. The survey link was accessible beginning Friday, October 12 and the survey closed on Saturday, November 3 (22 days). The 34-question survey included one option to describe an ideal candidate, and one to suggest names of potential candidates.

Survey Results

Everyone who filled out the survey (137 responses) indicated a primary relationship with IMS and 70% (97) indicated one or more secondary ways they can draw a connection to IMS. The largest primary representation by number of participants were: IMS alumni, followed by students and parents. Secondary connections to IMS showed strong responses from donors, alumni, parents, and students.   

Focus Groups

The listening process included meetings led by search committee members with a defined set of questions. We are grateful to the following persons and groups who took time to meet and share perspectives that informed the profile: administrative team, interim principal, faculty and staff, students, board, pastor clusters, and community members.

The search committee is appreciative of the feedback that each of you contributed to the process. Three documents were created by the committee based on feedback and the board approved the following documents at their meeting on Monday, Nov. 12: Principal Profile, Principal Job Description, and Principal Application.
