The volleyball team took second in the annual Washington High School volleyball tournament on Saturday, losing to #12 ranked 2A Wilton in the finals. “This was the third time we played Wilton this season. The first meeting was at their home tournament earlier in the season, in pool play today, and then in the finals of today’s tournament. Each time we have improved our play against them. They are a good team to play at this point in the season. Their level and style of play helps prepare us for the upcoming regional tournament. Overall, we had a good tournament. We started out strong, winning our first match of the day, a three-game battle against 4A Burlington. It is always a good start to a tournament by winning the first match of the day,” coach Miller said.
To reach the finals IMS had to get past:
Burlington: 21-8, 22-24, 15-10.
Tri-County: 21-4, 21-8
Wilton: 13-21, 8-21
Washington: 21-18, 21-16.
Before falling to Wilton: 15-21, 10-21.
“In order for the team to reach the finals, it took all of the team members performing their roles. Truly, the stand out player for the day was the team, as opposed to an individual,” coach Miller noted.
Statistical leaders for the day were: Mia Graber with 34 kills, Samantha Miller with 50 assists, Suzanna Yoder had 49 digs, and Yanitza Gutierrez-Larios added six aces.
Next up for IMS is a non-conference match against Waterloo Christian at Hillcrest Union tonight. There will be a JV match at 5:30 pm preceding the varsity match. The seniors will be honored before the varsity match. IMS is hosting the first round regional match against Tri-County on Tuesday, Oct. 16 starting at 7:00 pm.
