The IMS boys and girls completed three meets over the last week and a half despite cold, snowy, wet, and windy conditions. With wins over Highland and Lone Tree, the boys have started the season with a 2-2 conference record. The girls are 1-1 in the conference (1-3 overall) with a win over Mediapolis on April 12 and a loss to Louisa-Muscatine on April 13 (no team scores on April 5 vs Highland and Lone Tree).
Coach Steve Nelson had this to say, “It has just been a rough season with the snow and poor conditions. Practice started on March 12 and we’ve definitely had less than 10 suitable days for golf. The golf courses have opened late and have been closed or unplayable frequently because of snow or frost. Despite this, we are improving and know that the best weather of the season is ahead of us.”
Trevor Leyden has led the boys team each meet with scores of 45, 47 and 46 including medalist honors on April 5 vs Highland and Lone Tree. Lara Kliewer led the girls with a 67 on April 5 and Gretta Rempel has led the girls scoring on the last two meets with scores of 60 and 56.
“I’m really pleased with our student athletes’ attitudes this year,” said Coach Nelson. “We are ready for the weather to turn and to start getting better. I’ve seen glimpses of some quality golf, but it is just like any sport, when you don’t practice or can’t practice in our case, it’s hard to improve. The next couple weeks are going be very important for us as we start getting ready for the conference tournament and then post-season play.”
Looking ahead at the upcoming week: Mon, April 16 vs Wapello – CANCELLED, Tues, April 17 at North English (English Valley), Thurs, April 19 at Winfield (Winfield-Mt Union).
