In the first round of regional playoffs, IMS just slipped past the attack of the Warriors of Waco. Set scores were 18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 18-16. “The teams were very evenly matched and in the last two sets each point was a battle,” Coach Shannon Miller commented.
IMS gave up points early with serve receive errors and hitting errors. IMS was down by eight points at 13-21 in the first set before starting to settle down and peck away at the Warriors. However, the Warriors were able to stop the come back, winning the first set 18-25.
In the second set, IMS got out to a 12-5 lead, but then let Waco creep back into the match. “This is something we have struggled with all season, keeping the lead mid-set,” Coach Miller said. Waco surpassed IMS at 13-14 and kept the lead and won the set 22-25.
Set three started out the same as set two, in that IMS was able to open a five point lead early on, but was unable to sustain it. However, IMS was able to keep the score close, and took the lead at 23-22. IMS went on to win the next two points with an ace by Avery Blauvelt and a kill by Monet Slabach.
Set four was very much the same as set three. IMS let an 18-13 lead slip away. “We were not adjusting to their high-set offense. Our blockers were going up too early, and then getting tooled. Also, our left back defense had difficulties picking up hits from their number one outside hitter,” Coach Miller said.
Set five saw the momentum swing to IMS, who was able to get the lead and keep it until Waco tied it at 12-12. After a long disruption in the play due to refereeing and scoring questions, Waco won the next point taking the score to 12-13. A serving error by Waco allowed IMS to tie the score at 13-13. Both teams fought valiantly trading side outs until IMS was able to score two points in a row. A hit by Suzanna Yoder which Waco was not able to return, and a hit by Blauvelt which Waco blocked out of bounds, ended the match at 18-16 in IMS favor.
Statistical Leaders for the evening were: Rubye Ney with 10 kills, Samantha Miller with 25 assists, Raine Hathaway with 24 digs, and Miller with five aces. Ney also contributed three solo blocks.
Next up for IMS is round two of regional playoffs on Monday October 23rd at 7:00 pm at Winfield-Mt. Union.
