Church History field trip

calli-a-day-in-the-life-077Last week the Church and Anabaptist History classes went to the Mennonite Museum and Archives in Kalona. We met with Amanda Beachy, co-director, who explained some of the history of Amish and Mennonites in the local area. Amanda showed us some specific items in the museum – bonnets, casket sticks and a birthing chair – and then we did some exploring on our own. Students commented on the hardships that the early Amish settlers had to endure when they first came as well as the variety of reasons that church splits happened through the years. Lee Ebersole, who teaches the class, said, “We have a wonderful resource in the Mennonite Museum and Archives right here in our community. It was fun to see and hear the students connecting with the history of Anabaptists in this area.”
