Does it seem like there are times when God’s way seems a bit ridiculous? Recently, students in Lee Ebersole’s Old Testament class got a chance to feel a little bit of the absurdity of God’s call to the Israelites to march around Jericho. How strange it must have sounded to the people for marching, blowing trumpets and shouting to be a strategy to take down a city. Old Testament students re-created the procession around Jericho which included priests blowing trumpets and carrying the Ark of the Covenant. They went outside with “trumpets” (kazoos) and the Ark (a box) and marched around the IMS buildings twice. While this fell short of the total of thirteen times that the Israelites went around Jericho, it provided an opportunity to get just a slight feel of what it may have been like to carry out the instructions from God. And fortunately, the walls of IMS are still standing!
