IMS met Highland Thursday night for the final SEISC game of the season and came up short, falling 27-41 to the Huskies. The game started off slow as both teams struggled to find a groove offensively. IMS was not able to crack Highland’s zone and with two minutes remaining in the first half had scored just five points. A strong defensive effort kept IMS close and the score was 7-14 at the half. IMS started the second half on a 6-2 run, making it a 13-16 game with four minutes remaining in the period. Highland answered by ending the quarter on a 9-0 run, giving them a 25-13 lead going into the final period. IMS was able to stay within ten for most of the quarter, but could not get any closer.

IMS was led by Olivia Yutzy with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach Aaron Gingerich said, “We were not able to execute offensively against Highland’s zone. Their full court pressure bothered us and forced us into some unnecessary turnovers. We will continue to work on our offensive execution as we prepare for tournament week.”

IMS next plays Monday against Cedar Valley Christian.

Senior Ting Davidson volunteers bi-monthly to serve Free Lunch at the Wesley Foundation House in Iowa City. She helps prepare and serve the lunches to anyone who comes into the doors. On an average, approximately 100 people are served.

Ting learned about this program at West Union Mennnonite Church where she attends. Groups and organizations take turns serving meals and Ting decided to become a part of her church’s group. Ting explained, “I believe it is important to be involved in the community. This program provides one such opportunity and works well for people with busy schedules. Serving lunches allows you to meet and learn from people you may otherwise have never met.”

Ting recommends this service project to others. She says, “It’s a great opportunity to work with others and to serve the community.”

There have been times this season when IMS head coach Dwight Gingerich has questioned the toughness of his basketball team. The second quarter of Tuesday’s game against Mediapolis had to be one of those times, as IMS fell into a 14-point hole by halftime.

But IMS showed tremendous fortitude in the second half, rallying back to force overtime and then defeating the Bulldogs 86-80 in two overtimes.

“I thought the guys showed a lot of resilience and poise to stay at it given the collapse in the second quarter,” Gingerich said.

IMS out-scored Mediapolis 28-12 in the third quarter, with junior Chance Miller scoring 10 points in the period.

“Offensively, they did a nice job of attacking,” Mediapolis head coach Greg Worrall said. “They came out and attacked the basket, and Chance Miller made some nice plays for them. He was difficult to guard.”

IMS (15-4, 13-3 SEISC North) closed the third quarter on a 10-0 run. Senior Brian Hagedorn made a pair of free throws, and then after Miller drew a foul, the Mediapolis bench was whistled for a technical foul. Miller made all four free throws, and sophomore Dallas Nye added two more on the ensuing possession to tie the game at 52. Miller missed a driving layup in the closing seconds of the third quarter, but Hagedorn tipped it in to give IMS a 54-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“It was nothing fancy,” Gingerich said of his team’s comeback in the third quarter. “We just whittled away.”

Mediapolis (14-3, 13-3 SEISC North) regained the lead, though, and senior Jacob Darbyshire’s jumper from the wing gave the Bulldogs a 63-58 lead with 2:33 remaining. But Miller knocked down a 3-pointer, and after Mediapolis junior Jordan Wagenbach answered with a tough fadeaway jumper, junior Peyton Thompson nailed a 3-pointer to trim the Bulldogs’ lead to one with 1:33 left.

“I hadn’t been shooting well all game, but I thought, ‘This is really when we need it,’” Miller said of his 3-pointer. “Then Peyton hit one, and it kind of got the crowd on its feet. We kind of rallied off of that.”

Miller came up with a steal on the other end, and was fouled on a layup attempt with 43.8 seconds remaining. He missed the first free throw, but hit the second to tie the game.

Mediapolis held for the final shot, but turned the ball over on a five-second call with 6.3 seconds remaining. IMS got a shot at the win, but Thompson’s 3-pointer from the top of the key clanked off the front of the rim.

Miller hit a left-handed floater and Thompson drove the baseline for a finger roll layup to put IMS ahead 70-67 in the first overtime, but Wagenbach nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game with 36 seconds left.

“That kid is one of the most competitive players I’ve ever coached,” Worrall said of Wagenbach, who nailed five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points.

IMS again got a last shot to win, but Miller missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime.

“We had chances to score at the end of regulation and the first overtime, but we couldn’t quite make it happen,” Gingerich said.

Senior Johnny Lackender, who had a career-high 27 points to lead IMS, scored two layups early in the second overtime to give his team a two-point lead, and then Miller drove for a layup that put IMS up by four. Wagenbach made a free throw at the other end, but Miller found Thompson open in the corner for a 3-pointer that gave IMS a six-point cushion.

“Peyton’s a great shooter,” Miller said. “We’ve played together for a lot of years and just know each other. I knew he was going to be out there and I knew he was going to knock it down.”

Miller, who finished with 25 points, added another driving layup to extend the lead to eight, but Wagenbach answered with a long 3-pointer that practically came from the Mediapolis bench.

“That one, he was fading into his bench and I had a hand in his face,” Miller said. “I couldn’t have done anything different on that. Dwight called a timeout, and I was like, ‘This kid is a machine.’”

But IMS went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the closing minute to seal the 86-80 win.

“We just ran out of time and couldn’t quite get it done,” Worrall said.

It was a big win for IMS, which had lost 67-61 in Mediapolis on Dec. 20.

“That was huge,” said Thompson, who finished with 13 points. “In big games we don’t usually play that well. This game we came out in the second half, played our game and won the game. It was big.”

IMS didn’t play too well in the first half. After Lackender scored 14 points in the first quarter to give his team an 18-16 lead after one quarter of play, Mediapolis clamped down with a zone defense.

“We went to a 2-3 zone and a 1-3-1 zone a little bit and just tried to stop that inside game of theirs,” Worrall said. “[Lackender] is a wonderful player. He was difficult to handle inside.”

IMS didn’t respond well, and the Bulldogs closed the second quarter with a 22-5 run to take a 14-point halftime lead.

“They pretty much manhandled us and did whatever they wanted in the first half,” Miller said.

But when the going got tough, the tough, as they say, got going.

The Class of ’11 wanted to give a Gator to IMS as their class gift but realized that it would take more money than they had so they consulted with the current Class of ’12 and agreed that they would combine their money and get a used Gator for IMS. Last fall we asked Farmers Supply to keep their eye out on a good, used Gator. In January a phone call was received from Phil Ropp telling us that they were going to order a new Gator for IMS to get the exact features that we would need. Because of the generosity of Phil, Myron and Warren Ropp of Farmers Supply Sales, Inc. along with the Classes of ’11 & ’12 a brand new BEAUTIFUL Gator will now be available to meet our needs.

Phil Ropp (’66) of Farmers Supply Sales, Inc. delivered the new John Deere Gator and turned over the keys to maintenance director Joe Swartzentruber on Thursday. This has been a need for many years as Joe cares for the upkeep of our campus because the little golf cart that has been used doesn’t effectively meet his needs!

A big thank you goes to the Class of 2011, the Class of 2012, and Farmers Supply Sales, Inc. as they each contributed one-third of the cost to this cool, new machine!

The FCS department, previously known as Home Economics, was re-named in 1994 as Family and Consumer Sciences. The department focuses on the study of homemaking and the relation of the home to the community. Formerly limited to food, clothing, sewing, and housing, it now includes many aspects of family relations, parental education, consumer education, and more. Read more.

Ranee Brokaw (’01) is in her second year as the FCS teacher. All the classes in the FCS department are semester based and are elective. Most of these classes are a combination of learning information from a textbook and then putting it in to practice in some hands-on way.

There are three FCS classes offered in the Fall:
Clothing and Textiles: This class teaches introductory level sewing. It is mostly project based and very hands-on, giving students an opportunity to learn how to measure fabric, use a pattern, and operate a sewing machine. It is a great class for anyone wanting to learn sewing at a very basic level or for a student who is more advanced and ready to take on more challenging projects since each student works at their own pace and chooses projects according to their own skill level. A favorite of many students is the Recycle and Re-design project where students take an old garment and make it into something new. Another highlight this year was making and delivering pillows to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.
Child Development: This class is divided into two sections; the first quarter focuses on pregnancy and childbirth and the second quarter gives experience working with children and allows students to explore careers in Early Childhood Education. Students always enjoy hosting the IMS Preschool as a final project, giving them a chance to incorporate the skills they have learned about development and working with young children. Several field trips are taken and they do some observations, hear from guest speakers on several topics, as well as participate in the Baby-Think-It-Over experience which is always a fun challenge.
Interior Design: This class is an introduction to the wide range of skills included in field of interior design. Students learn to more fully understand the design process by studying the principles and elements of design as well as getting some background information on housing styles and trends. This class gives lots of opportunities for students to show their creativity and style by completing several projects that demonstrate their knowledge of design. Some highlights of this class include a local “Parade of Homes”, hearing from guest speakers who work in the design industry, and a practical final – re-designing a room in their own home.
Two classes are offered in the Spring:
Foods 1: This class is an introductory level course that teaches students the basics of food, nutrition, and wellness as well as providing experience cooking in the kitchen. Students set wellness goals, reflect on choices they are making toward a healthy lifestyle, and get to cook and eat each week! Of course, the eating seems to draw students to this class but Ranee has found that most of them learn much more than just how to cook the foods preparedduring labs. Ranee loves teaching this class because students come in with a wide range of skill levels and experiences and it is great to see them work and learn together about such an important topic – the food we eat. Ranee comments, “The final in this class requires students to prepare a meal at home for their families which is such a rewarding experience for them as well as for me as a teacher to see their work. I am looking forward to some new units about organic vs. non-organic foods and a focus on fruits and vegetables this year.” Another new element to the class this year is that students are participating in the Live Healthy Iowa Governor’s Kids Challenge where they track their activity minutes as well as specific nutrient intakes each week and is a great way to keep wellness as a focus during the semester.
Culinary Arts: This is another food-related class but is a more advanced food preparation class that is offered to juniors and seniors. In this class students learn more complicated cooking skills as well as getting to plan and carry out a cafe for guests from the community during block periods for the second half of the semester. This is a great chance to get to prepare large amounts of food, learn about ethnic cuisines and focus on responsibility and teamwork as they might in the culinary industry. It is also a great way for community members to get a chance to experience IMS in a new way.

When asked what her goals were for the semester, Ranee replied, “More than anything, I hope students take away skills that will help them later on in life. I enjoy so many aspects of teaching FCS, but also using FCS skills in my own life, whether it be cooking, sewing, designing, or parenting, and I hope that I pass along some of that enthusiasm on to my students and get them interested in something that may not have otherwise explored.”

Parents can help students in Ranee’s classes by being aware of what is happening in class and encouraging them to use the skills they learn in class at home and in their lives beyond. Ranee comments, “I always love to hear that students are cooking dinner at home or completed a sewing project after their semester class is over. The best thing about FCS classes is that skills are taught that are all so practical later in life…whether you go in to these fields professionally, use them as a parent or homemaker, or just as hobbies.”

What are the greatest challenges to your teaching or to your subject? Ranee responds,

“Firstly, lots of people don’t know that the acronym FCS stands for…It’s just the new name for Home Ec.! Secondly, there are lots of false perceptions about FCS being just for girls or just for people who want to bake their own bread and sew their own clothes. While I love when girls take my classes and baking your own bread and making your own clothes are great goals, there is much more to it than that! Anyone who likes design, likes to create, likes to eat, is a consumer of anything, intends to be a parent someday or is interested in health and wellness can learn something is FCS and I can almost guarantee that they will have a good time doing it!”

IMS lost to an unbeaten Mediapolis team Tuesday night 27-60. IMS struggled to take care of the ball committing 20 turnovers on the night, and was out rebounded 18-30. IMS fell behind early but kept it close with some stingy defense, holding Mediapolis to just eleven first quarter points. IMS was not able to convert on some good opportunities around the basket, and at halftime Mediapolis had stretched their 11-4 first quarter lead to 29-15. Mediapolis quickly shut the door on any hopes of an IMS comeback by starting the third quarter on a 14-4 run.

Coach Aaron Gingerich said “I thought our girls played really hard. I was happy with how we executed our plays and got good looks at the basket. We need to continue to work on limiting our turnovers and rebounding the basketball.”

IMS was led by Olivia Yutzy who scored 12 points in the game. Riley Schmieder had seven points, Amber Davis scored five, and Kristin Davis rounded out the scoring with three. IMS is still without Laura Hochstetler, who is out with a thumb injury.

IMS next plays Thursday at home against Highland.
