“Views along the way while passing by a near future” opens Saturday

The IMS Spring art exhibit will open tomorrow night before and after the Woody Guthrie Drama.  IMS alumnus  Anthony Yoder’s (’70) artwork is called “Views along the way while passing by a near future”.  Anthony calls himself a self-taught artist. In his artist’s statement Anthony describes his art-making process. “The emotional part of making art is rather intriguing to me because as little art as I have done, I can see that there is a plot to it. Just like any other task or job it involves a process which has an end to it even though it is not always obvious when you start the process.  That end should always promote dignity, respect and common value within the spheres of our lives. By changing the ordinary and sometimes mundane routines of everyday life into objects of beauty and God honoring activities we lift each other up as we use our God given talents that will deepen our understanding of God’s work in our lives.”

The work is primarily painting, with some drawings and multimedia works. His wife Sarah has a piece in the exhibit taken from the epistle of James, and his future son-in-law also has a piece.

Here are two images from the exhibit. Each is forty eight inches square and each makes a specific Biblical reference.

For now we see through a glass darkly.

Hungrytown will bring folk music to Celebration Hall

Ken Anderson and Rebecca Hall of Hungrytown

Hungrytown will be conducting a songwriter’s workshop on October 27th at 1:45 in Celebration Hall. This will be followed by a concert at 2:30 pm. The public is invited to this free event.

The Hungrytown duo is married couple Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson who have been involved in music-making for a long time and have made folk music of astonishing delicacy and purity. It is Rebecca Hall’s voice and her songwriting that make Hungrytown so unique. She sings gently and with a pure tone that reminds one of mid-60s folk/pop sounds. Ken Anderson is responsible for the arrangements that fit around her voice and contributes some seamless harmony vocals as well as any instrument required other than Rebecca’s acoustic guitar – instruments that appear so unobtrusively you barely notice what is being played a lot of the time

“Megan Yoder, Expressions” Art Exhibit to open Sunday

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9th), before and after the Fall Music Concert, IMS alum Megan Yoder’s (’07) art exhibit will be open for viewing for the first time. Megan has her BA in Art from Bluffton University and substituted as IMS art teacher for the first 20 days of school while Darvin Yoder was recovering from an injury.

Now, we have the opportunity to experience her skills on another level: Her exhibit, “Megan Yoder, Expressions”, includes a broad selection of her work from her time at Bluffton. The exhibit includes two examples of cast glass, a series of porcelain pieces, a remarkable teapot with two cups (which betrays Megan’s unruly wit), a sculpture in alabaster, and a large selection of prints, drawings and paintings. Look for her tiny mezzotint portrait, about the size of a postage stamp. Study her series of six drawings entitled “Forgotten Nobility”.  Megan says she likes to “obsess over detail”, which is most obvious in her two-dimensional work. You will be well entertained. Her show will remain for the entire first semester and will be open for viewing before and after Celebration Hall performances. If you want to stop in to see Megan’s show sometime during the school day, simply phone or ask at the school office.
