Friday evening was the new family potluck at IMS. Parents of freshman, transfer and international students gathered to share a meal and to get to know each other. The students were asked to introduce the members of their family. Then prayer and the delicious meal followed by a lot of fellowship. All who came enjoyed getting to know other IMS families.
At 7:00 the Sibling Family “parents” came to introduce themselves to their “children’s” families. The new students then joined the rest of the student body outside for activities followed by small group activities with their sibling families in various places. Meanwhile, Larry and Tony discussed common questions about IMS and answered any further questions that the new parents asked. The Freshman students returned later for the class lock-in with some parent chaperones and Aaron Gingerich and Maya Kehr, their class sponsors.

The annual All School Party, hosted by YCO, brought the student body together Friday night, Aug. 19 for an evening of games and get acquainted activities.
Freshmen, transfers, and international students were assigned to a male and a female senior in Sibling Family groups to help each other break into the high school setting. Sophomores and juniors joined the others at 7 pm outside to play Horse, Knights, and Cavaliers and Walk-a-Mile. Next came group Dodge Ball in the gym.
Following the organized games, the sibling families headed toward after-party fun. For most that meant eating together at a restaurant in Iowa City and finding something to do afterwards.
At 10 pm the freshmen were returned to the school for an all-night lock-in, organized by sponsors Maya Kehr and Aaron Gingerich. (Thanks to freshmen parents for helping chaperone the overnighter!)

On Friday night Y-Co sponsored the annual all-school Capture the Flag event on the school campus. Teams consisting of seniors/freshmen, juniors/sophomores battled to capture each other’s flags without being caught and sent to “jail” where jailers Meredith Schrock, Carly Unruh, Jesse Shetler, and Taylor Fulton pronounced sentences on their “victims.” Sometimes prisoners completed push-ups, pretended to eat grass like cows or created a human pyramid, while still others acted out stories for their jailers.
In the final of three games, the seniors and sophomores combined to win against the juniors and freshmen. Dillon Bender explained the final action of the game: “Tommy (Rhodes), Laura (Hochstetler), Ethan (Gingerich), and I crept toward the flag while the rest of the seniors distracted everyone guarding the flag. I rushed in, grabbed the flag, and we all took off.”
Exhilarating chase scenes! Dirt! Disguises and deceit! Jail sentences! Energy and exhaustion! Elation and despair! Drama! Fierce competition! What do all these words center around? CAPTURE THE FLAG!
All of those things and MORE will be included in the all-school game of capture the flag on Friday, April 1st. So GET PUMPED and stay tuned for more riveting details.
The evening began with interactive games in the gym.

The sibling families (old-time students are paired up with new students and create a “family”) went out to eat after the games at IMS and then went bowling and miniature golfing. The evening concluded with the freshman students back to IMS for an all-night lock-in!
