It’s never easy to lose the first game in districts and end the season. Even though IMS served 95% as a team and finished with 27 kills, their play was just not sharp enough tonight and that was the difference. Casey Perez, Laura Hochstetler, Olivia Yutzy and Naomi Miller defensively dug a lot of hard hit attacks tonight but offensively IMS couldn’t put the ball down when the points were needed. IMS loses to Pekin

IMS lost a hard fought volleyball match at Pekin Tuesday night, 25-23, 18-25, 25-14, 13-25, 13-15. Once again the IMS defensive play combined with 95% team serving kept them in the match but it wasn’t enough to take the victory. The back row players consisting of Naomi Miller, Keilah Brokaw, Olivia Yutzy, Laura Hochstetler, and Casey Perez were busy accumulating 101 defensive digs in five games. Laura Hochstetler and Olivia Yutzy led the team in kills with 17 and 12 respectively. Casey Perez had 30 assists and 22 digs. Coach Cindy Miller noted, “We struggled all night to maintain the momentum and a continuity on our side of the net. Hopefully we have learned from these recent losses and will take that knowledge into our post season tournament games.”
IMS vs Keota 21-14, 19-21, 15-11
IMS vs Regina 21-12, 7-21, 7-15
IMS vs Wilton 15-21, 22-20, 14-16
IMS vs Sigourney 17-25, 25-22, 10-15
IMS competed in the Washington tournament on Saturday. IMS defeated Keota, but lost to Regina, Wilton and Sigourney. Coach Cindy Miller commented on the day. “For us, the tournament felt more like a marathon than a volleyball tournament. Even after serving 93% as a team, we still took everyone we competed against to three games but failed to win more matches due to the inconsistency of our playing. At times, our defense was absolutely amazing. Casey Perez (39 digs), Naomi Miller (32 digs), and Laura Hochstetler (35 digs) made some unbelievable diving saves which contributed to wearing down opponents.” The offense was sparked by Casey Perez with 57 assists and outside hitters, Olivia Yutzy (35 kills) and Laura Hochstetler (15 kills) but IMS just couldn’t maintain that level of excellence throughout every game with each opponent. IMS plays in their last conference game Tuesday night at Pekin.
Stat Leaders:
Casey Perez – 14 kills, 57 assists, 40-42 serving with 5 aces, 39 digs
Laura Hochstetler – 15 kills, 25-29 serving with 4 aces, 35 digs
Olivia Yutzy – 35 kills, 26-30 serving with 5 aces, 23 digs
Laura Yoder – 11 kills, 28-29 serving with 5 aces
Naomi Miller – 35-37 serving with 4 aces, 32 digs
Keilah Brokaw – 22-22 serving with 3 aces, 15 digs
IMS lost to Winfield Mt. Union in a hard fought match Thursday night. After losing the first two games, IMS came back in game three and four, but lost in game five 10-15. “Defensively, I thought everyone was ready to move and we covered the court quite well. The highlight was seeing our blockers getting their hands on the ball,” commented Coach Cindy Miller. Anya Slabaugh and Olivia Yutzy contributed to a team high 18 blocks. “It’s always a positive to come back from two games down and have the momentum going into game five. We just had a few more hitting errors than Winfield-Mt. Union and that cost us the match. Our girls gained valuable court experience tonight that will definitely help us in future matches,” noted Coach Miller.
Before the match, senior manager Amber Davis was honored on senior night. She is the only senior on the team.
