The Iowa Mennonite Soccer team traveled to

Williamsburg and claimed a 4-0 win over the Raiders. With a strong wind blowing from the south end of the field to the north it seemed the coin toss and the choice of ends might be key. The coin toss went Williamsburg’s way so IMS went into the wind the first half. After taking some time to figure out how this would affect play, IMS forwards led by Dillon Bender and Reggie Hostetler began putting pressure on the Williamsburg goal. At the halfway point, Peyton Thompson sent a ball forward to Tommy Rhodes who sent his shot to the left corner of the goal. A few minutes later Nathan Peters sent in a cross where Reggie Hostetler was waiting to redirect the ball into the goal. The back line of Chris Perez, Cody Miller, Levi Schrock and Jesse Shetler did a great job of containing the Raider offense and of dealing with the long balls coming out of the Williamsburg end of the field.

.
The halftime talk and instructions were interrupted by a fierce rainstorm which soaked the players and coaches and sent the fans scrambling for their cars. After a good soaking, the sun came out, the referee’s returned to the field and play resumed with the second half. Just a minute into the half, Matt Libby sent a ball into the front of the net where it took a deflection. Making a run from his midfield position, Nathan Peters knocked in his first varsity goal. The next goal came three minutes later when Dillon Bender sent a corner kick into the box where Levi Schrock headed the ball strongly into the net. The back line continued to play well and goalie Ben Brennemen gathered in four saves.

IMS moves to 14-4 for the season. IMS hosts neighboring Mid-Prairie, Thursday with JV/Varsity matches beginning at 5:00. Before the varsity game, at approximately 6:15 the seniors and their parents will be recognized for their four years of play.

The IMS JV took awhile to figure out how to score but when they did they were prolific.
The  scoreless first half saw Jameson Lammer and Michael Hersberger play some excellent defense and goalie Joel Shetler face a penalty kick to keep the score at 0-0. Reggie Hostetler opened the scoring with an unassisted goal halfway through the second half. With just over five minutes left in the game Artemiy Sayfutdinov scored on a head ball from a corner kick taken by Spencer Schrock. Two minutes later Jacob Valov beat a defender, then made a beautiful pass to Kobi Rossom who stuck the shot into the far netting.  A minute later Kirby Shetler sent a ball to Kobi who again capitalized by scoring his second goal of the night. Spencer Schrock finished the scoring with a long shot from the side of the field.

After a week off the IMS soccer team returned to action hosting number four ranked West Liberty. West Liberty came out strong and took early control of the midfield. Ten minutes into the game West Liberty crossed the ball into the 18 where a West Liberty player side volleyed a shot into the upper corner of the net. Showing that they were not going to roll over, IMS responded a minute later as Matt Libby sent a ball forward where Tommy Rhodes ran onto the ball and slammed it by the goalie.

Justin Boller

Play settled down a bit as both teams struggled to establish consistent control in the midfield. West Liberty was the next to strike, scoring on a beautiful head ball from near the 18. Once again IMS responded and created a good scoring chance only to see the ball knocked down by a hand ball. Awarded the penalty kick, the shot ricocheted off the corner post before bouncing out of bounds. Chris Perez, returning to action for the first time in two weeks, intercepted a ball in the back line and sent a ball forward where Tommy Rhodes collected the ball and struck it by the goalie to even the score at 2-2.

Chance Miller

After some halftime adjustments the IMS backline of Chris Perez, Levi Schrock, Justin Boller and Cody Miller put a damper on the West Liberty offense, forcing them to take shots from longer range. Meanwhile midfielders, Tommy Rhodes, Chance Miller, Nathan Peters, and Nicholas Yoder began to assert some more possession in the midfield. A little over ten minutes into the half, four guys, Matt Libby, Reggie Hostetler, Enrique Sanchez and Jesse Shetler came off the bench to provide some fireworks. First, Hostetler took a pass from the back line, beat a defender, then sent a ball forward to Libby who outran a defender, forced the goalie to commit, then sent the ball calmly into the goal. Two minutes later, Jesse Shetler intercepted a pass, took the ball wide, before passing it to Reggie Hostetler who sent a shot into the goal for the 4-2 lead.

Dillon Bender

West Liberty didn’t back down and kept pushing forward and at the halfway point scored pushing the score to 4-3.  The rest of the game was a nail biter as West Liberty mounted ten second half shots. The defensive line continued its strong play, while goalie Ben Brenneman made some key saves, twice pulling the ball in as it lay near or on the goal line.

With the win IMS moves to 11-3 on the season. IMS hosts Wapello Friday evening at 5:00 pm in the first round of the SEISC conference tournament.

Soccer suffers first conference loss

The IMS soccer team arrived in Columbus with tired legs and struggled to generate much intensity in the heat and humidity. Soccer can be a funny game in that the team which possesses the ball the majority of the time and which generates the most shots can still lose the game. Such was the case at Columbus as IMS maintained the majority of the possession and outshot Columbus 19-10. Early in the game Tommy Rhodes beat a defender and sent a strong shot toward the goal only to see it clang harmlessly off the post. Columbus was able to score with 9 minutes left in the first half after a defender slipped in the mud. After a nice give and go, an IMS defender poked the ball away only to see it bounce back to the Columbus player who put it in the net.

The IMS defense made some adjustments to the kick and run style Columbus played and generated some more offense. But given the field conditions it was often difficult to get a clean touch on the ball and to sustain a quick passing game.
IMS moves to 10-3 and 7-1 in conference. The guys will get a much deserved rest before hosting West Liberty next Thursday.

The IMS JV found ways to win as goalie Joel Shetler stopped one penalty kick. Spencer Schrock scored the IMS goal to equalize the score. For the second time this season, IMS faced the team ranked #2 in class 1A. This time the foe was Iowa City Regina, the three time state champion. Like the earlier game with then # 2 ranked Solon, IMS was on the short end of the 1-0 score.

In the first half both teams pushed forward but in getting used to Regina’s more physical style of play, IMS allowed Regina to get more possession of the ball. Several early Regina chances were snuffed out but after a defender slipped, Regina was able to capitalize and stick the ball in the net for the 1-0 lead halfway through the first half. The back line held firm the rest of the half and the game as Levi Schrock, Cody Miller, and Jesse Shetler were joined by Justin Boller who moved back to help in the absence of an injured Chris Perez. In the midfield, Chance Miller, Tommy Rhodes and Peyton Thompson worked hard defensively but struggled to maintain possession in the half.

Matt Libby

In the second half midfielders, Miller, Rhodes, and Thompson did a good job of maintaining possession and as a result were able to create some scoring opportunities for Dillon Bender and Reggie Hostetler who were running up top. The defense continued to play strong limiting the chances of the physical Regina forwards. When Regina did get off two strong shots, goalie Ben Brenneman was there to first gather in the save, and then on the next shot, to time his leap, to just push the shot wide of the goal. In the waning minutes of the game IMS pushed forward and created a good shot on a corner kick but theRegina defense clamped down.

IMS moves to 10-2 overall and remains at 7-0 at the conference. IMS travels to Columbus Thursday in a return to conference action.

The IMS offense was running on all cylinders Monday night against Highland as Dillon Bender and Reggie Hostetler picked up hat tricks along with goals by Matt Libby, Tommy Rhodes and Nicholas Yoder.  Matt Libby opened the scoring with a goal in the first two minutes of play to get the game off to a good start. The next goal came halfway through the period on a nice cross into the box from Justin Boller. Waiting to volley it into the goal was Tommy Rhodes. A minute later Chance Miller slid a ball through the back line where Reggie Hostetler ran on to the ball and stuck it into the net. Nicholas Yoder finished the scoring in the half on a nice assist from Dillon Bender.

Nicholas Yoder

Bender started the second half with two goals, the first on a beautiful assist from Peyton Thompson. For his second goal, Bender measured a ball which had been deflected off a corner kick and pounded a shot into the upper corner. Reggie scored next from the touch line when he tried to lift the ball over the goalie. Instead the spin on the ball carried it to the far post where it slid in for the score. Spencer Schrock picked up the next assist on a cross into Bender. Reggie finished off the scoring gathering in a deflection and sending it by the goalie.

On a night with the offense clicking, the defenders shut down the few Highland offensive pushes limiting Highland to four shots. IMS moves to 10-1 on the season.

IMS returns to action Tuesday night hosting #2 ranked Regina.

On a cold, blustery morning IMS opened its tournament with an 8-0 win over Wapello. Tommy Rhodes notched his second hat trick in a week on assists from Justin Boller, Reggie Hostetler, and Peyton Thompson. Adding unassisted goals were Matt Libby, Reggie Hostetler, and Peyton Thompson. Along the way Dillon Bender scored on an assist from Nicholas Yoder. Spencer Schrock finished the scoring as he tallied his first varsity goal on an assist from Zach Weiss. The defense played well limiting Wapello to three shots.

The family of Jason Marner was on hand for the dedication of the soccer dugouts.

After the game, time was taken to dedicate the Jason Marner Memorial dug outs. The dug outs were particularly appreciated today as they kept the team out of the cold breeze which blew all day.

In the championship game IMS faced a stout Fairfield team. Both teams struggled to mount a sustained offense. Tommy Rhodes, Peyton Thompson, and Dillon Bender created several good chances but the shots went wide or over the crossbar. About halfway through the period, Dillon Bender sent a ball into the box where Reggie Hostetler headed it into the goal. Unfortunately the official said he had stopped play for a tripping call against Fairfield. Disallowing the goal, the official did give the Fairfield player a yellow and IMS a direct kick.

When the offense isn’t clicking the defense needs to step up and the back line of Levi Schrock, Cody Miller, Jesse Shetler and Sam Swartzendruber did just that, stymieing the speedy Fairfield forwards. Midfielders Nathan Peters, Justin Boller, Matt Libby, along with Nicholas Yoder and Rhodes and Thompson kept possession in the midfield. The half ended 0-0.

The start of the second half was delayed after an upset Fairfield fan came onto the field and refused to leave. When play resumed both teams seemed to be bothered by the increasingly bitter wind and fatigue. The IMS defense held strong and Ben Brenneman did a good job grabbing those balls which made there way through. As the half wound down, Matt Libby gathered in a pass, beat his defender down the wing before cutting in and sending a shot by the goalie for the 1-0 lead. As the intensity increased a Fairfield player was given his second yellow so Fairfield played a man down the rest of the way. Peyton Thompson nearly added to the score but his shot was deflected. In the meantime the defensive unit held strong to make the 1-0 lead stand.

IMS is now 9-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. IMS returns to action Monday hosting Highland in a JV/Varsity match.
