Golf teams in action

The IMS boy’s golf team woke up bright and early on Saturday morning leaving the school at 5:15 to head south to Donnellson to play in the Central Lee golf tournament. Medalist from Central Lee was Brian Krehbiel with a 69. IMS was led by Tanner Leyden with a 98, Richard Deming shot a 115, Ben Miller carded a 124, and Grant Schlabaugh shot a 126 to give the boys a team score of 463. Coach Ryan Miller said “All of the boys have improved by quite a few strokes from the beginning of the year. It ended up being a fun day of golf with four good rounds from the boys.”

Central Lee won the tournament with a team score of 317. Keokuk had 329, Notre Dame West Burlington 344, Holy Trinity Catholic 345, Van Buren 374, Ft. Madison 392, and IMS with 463.

On Monday the girls headed south to Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course in Ft. Madison to play in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet. Rain soaked the course over night and made things a little difficult for the girls. Everyone finished their rounds with soaked feet and some had soaked pants, yet the girls did not complain. Medalist for the North was Mackenzie Noble from Wapello with an 87. IMS was led by Jess Miller with a 149. Michaela Prihoda shot a 168, Mischa De Jesus carded a 173, and Kaycee Miller and Breana Stout both shot a 181 for a team score of 671. Wapello led team scoring with 388, followed by Mediapolis 438, Winfield Mount Union 439, Columbus 471, Lone Tree 491, Louisa Muscatine 546, IMS 671, and Waco did not have enough golfers to have a team score. “Even though the conditions were not ideal the girls had a lot of fun,” commented Coach Miller.

Golf team competes at Hawk Invite

With a wet start to the day, things dried off and a great day of golf was had by the IMS boys golf team as they played in the Mid-Prairie Hawk Invite in Kalona on Tuesday afternoon. Tanner Leyden and Randy Ropp were not available so Ben Miller and Brent Brenneman filled in and did a superb job. Brent had the low score for IMS with a 115. Zach Hill shot a 135, Ben Miller carded a 137, and Jordan Miller shot a 139 for a team score of 526. Medalist for the tournament was Jace Koenig from Durant with a four over par 76. The low team score with a 319 was North Cedar followed by Mount Vernon with a 324, West Branch had 334, Mid-Prairie had 337 for fourth place, Regina shot 341, Durant had 348, Winfield Mount Union shot 356, Wilton shot a 365, West Liberty a 386, Lone Tree had 432, and IMS shot a 526 for eleventh place. There were plenty of great golfers at the invite which is evident with the team scores.

Coach Ryan Miller commented, “The IMS boys did a great job with their first 18 hole meet of the year. They were also able to not let a few rain drops ruin their mood to play golf. It was great to see Brent and Ben come in at the last minute and shoot some good scores.”

“It was a bit on the windy side which did not help the scores any, but the course was pretty wide open to make things a little easier. IMS was missing some key golfers on both the boys and girls teams. Hopefully we will have them back heading into post season play which starts next week,” said Coach Ryan Miller. On Thursday both boys and girls will travel to play Mediapolis.

Golf teams travel to Wapello

The IMS boys and girls golf team headed south to face Wapello on a perfect night for golf last Thursday evening. The boys’ medalist from Wapello was Jordan Schoonover with a score of 42.  IMS was led by Tanner Leyden who shot a 49. Richard Deming shot a 64 and Brent Brenneman and Zach Hill both carded a 67 for a team score of 249. Wapello won the meet with a team score of 177.

On the girls side of things it was hard for the girls to keep up with the big hitters from Wapello, but the three girls that made the trip hung in there and gave it everything they had. The girls’ medalist from Wapello was Mackinzie Noble with a 45. The IMS girls were led by senior Jess Miller with a 74, followed by Breana Stout with a 75, and Kaycee Miller who shot a 78. IMS was not able to produce a team score with only three golfers. Wapello shot a team score of 203.

Coach Ryan Miller commented, “We need to start eliminating the high score holes. Scores are looking pretty good but then there are always a couple holes that are too high. Once spring break is over we are going to focus on lowering our scores.”
