Art work accepted into competition at Chait Gallery

Four Iowa Mennonite School students were accepted into the annual juried high school art competition at Chait Gallery in Iowa City.  Unfortunately none of the students were able to attend the opening reception on April 13th because they were in Ohio on choir tour.  However, their work will remain on display at Chait through May 11th. You may stop in to see their work and the work of other students in area schools during normal business hours daily. Chait is located at 218 E Washington St. in Iowa City. The four accepted entries are:

Art students work on lard pig for the Wellman Pork Fest

The Wellman Pork Fest is sponsoring a competition between local schools to make a lard pig (like the Iowa State Fair has a butter cow). Christopher Perez, Amber Davis and Maddie Miller have accepted the challenge and are working on making a pig for the festival. The entries will be judged on Saturday (10/8) during the Pork Fest. The winning school will get a $500 scholarship for a student of the school’s choosing.

The main obstacle for these students is trying to sculpt the lard before it gets so soft. As Christopher pointed out, “at the Iowa State Fair they work on the butter cow in a cooler, using a heated knife to sculpt. It is more challenging to sculpture the pig when the lard gets so soft.”

They did a GREAT job. However, not being able to work on it in a cooler turned out to be the “death” of the pig. We still give the purple ribbon to Christopher, Maddie and Amber for their effort!

ALMOST completed pig.

It was just too soft to stay standing!

“Megan Yoder, Expressions”

“Megan Yoder, Expressions” art exhibit is currently on display in the IMS Art Gallery.  Megan Yoder is an IMS class of 2007 graduate and graduated from Bluffton University in 2011 with a BA in art.  Megan was the substitute art teacher for the first 20 days of school while Darvin Yoder was recovering from an injury.  Now we have the opportunity to experience her skills on another level.  Her show will be displayed for the entire first semester and will be open for viewing before and after Celebration Hall performances.  If you want to stop in to see Megan’s show sometime during the school day, simply phone or ask at the school office.

Thanks for the help!

Megan Yoder

Megan Yoder has been filling in for Art Instructor Darvin Yoder as he recovers from his accident. Darvin is returning on Monday and Megan is leaving with her family for a European vacation! We had a mini-celebration for Megan by enjoying a delicious meat and cheese tray from Twin County Dairy.

We thank Megan for her good work and willingness to help fill in the gaps!

Alisha Miller burns art project on last day of school!

For her Creative Project in Art during first semester, Alisha Miller made a heart-shaped sculpture out of match sticks and tape. But as it was nearing completion, the ideas and questions began to flow: Does a heart made out of matches need to be burned? If it is burned, who needs to witness the event? What meanings would the burning suggest? When should it be done and how should it be documented?

Today, the last day for the IMS Senior class of 2011, Alisha’s conceptual sculptural work finally reached completion. The Sculpture class went into the parking lot and observed as she lit her heart and watched it burn away.
