Golf Season Summary

The 2017 Iowa Mennonite golf season brought a lot of anticipation and excitement. Through a generous donor, the team purchased new team golf bags and with a core of returning golfers on both the boys and girls side the potential for a great season both individually and as teams.

The boys returned the entire varsity squad with hopes of finishing in the top half of the conference with the potential of advancing in postseason play. Seniors Roman Slabach, Caleb Yoder, Drake Brezina(recently cleared from knee surgery), and sophomore Trevor Leyden will out a solid core.

In my fifth year as head coach of the IMS golf teams, I’ve never been as excited about a season. Those four guys led us all of 2016, and will continue to be anchors on the 2017 season. We were teased by beautiful weather in late February and early March and these guys got a really early start on the year. Unfortunately, once the official golf season started, wet weather as well as a busy school schedule slowed down the progress of the team.

As of May 1, the boys finished the regular season dual meets with a record of 3-3 in the conference and 4-4 overall. In the past our teams rarely thought about shooting a team score(low four scores) below 200, but things have changed this year. Season lows came at Columbus(Cedar Crest CC), 183, and Wapello(Heritage Oaks), 193.

Trevor Leyden has really played well gaining medalist honors in three meets already including a low round of 40 at Columbus. Caleb Yoder, also has improved his game with several runner-up finishes including a 42 at Columbus.

As we move into conference tournament play and post-season play, it could set up to be an exciting finish to the season. All of our golfers have been improving throughout the season and developing as players. I am hopeful that we can peak at the right time and put four good scores together when it really matters.

On the girls side, the team has finished the regular season with a 1-5 record in the conference and 1-6 record overall although we have not had a full team score in two of those meets. Gretta Rempel has led the team each meet and comes into conference tournament with a 54.86 average. It’s been fantastic seeing Gretta’s individual success this year gaining meet medalist honors twice and runner-up medalist twice.

Postseason play begins for the boys on Friday, May 12 at the 1A sectional at Twins Lakes Golf Course in Winfield. For the girls, 1A regionals begin on Monday, May 15 at Deerwood Golf Course in New London.

I am hopeful that we can continue to improve over the final week of the season and continue to shoot some personal record lows. More than that, I am hopeful that each one of these young men and women can grow in their relationships with Jesus Christ. Golf is a challenging and often frustrating sport, but it is also a sport that takes trust. One of my favorite golf verses is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” May we find our trust in Jesus Christ, submitting to him as Lord, and hopefully…stay in the fairway and out of the rough.
