IMS varsity started the season with the leadership of three senior captains and returning starters Samantha Miller (setter), Rubye Ney (outside hitter) and Suzanna Yoder (libero). Joining the three seniors are junior Mia Graber, who will be back in the starting line-up after recovering from a knee injury. Sophomore Yanitza Gutierrez-Larios saw significant playing time last year as a freshman, and junior Danae McGaffey will build upon the contributions she made last year. New to the lineup are juniors Katelyn Lehman, Abby Fritz, and Yuliana Montes de Oca. Coach Miller notes, “Though we have three returning starters, Gutierrez-Larios who often started, and Graber returning, I still consider this team a young team since we are replacing five positions vacated by five veteran seniors from last year’s team.”
The IMS schedule has some slight changes to it this season. A Labor Day weekend tournament was added as well as a non-conference match against Waterloo Christian later in the season. “The Labor Day tournament was added to give our new starters more experience early in the season. Adding Waterloo Christian to the schedule allows us to have a match at the end of regular season play and the start of the state tournament. This is important as it helps keep the team’s match skills fresh,” Coach Miller stated.
Season play started at the Fairfield Quad, followed by a conference home match against Lone Tree, then a tournament at Burlington-Notre Dame on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend giving the IMS squad some tough competition early on. “The SEISC North Division always presents challenging play for IMS and this year will be no different. I am looking forward to our team improving and developing confidence as the season progresses,” coach Miller said.
Rounding out the program are the following players on the F/S/JV team: freshmen Grace Miller and Evelyn Gerber, sophomores Elizabeth Slater, Katelyn Swantz, Malia Sedlacek and Sophie Marshall, and junior Isabel Canchola. Check back on our website for updates and pictures on the team.
Our cross country teams have started their 2018 season. The season started off with the disappointment of having to cancel our Early Bird meet due to stormy weather. It was a good call with 80+ mile per hour winds that came up just after 5:00 p.m. The runners were able to get into the Williamsburg meet two days later.
Our teams are coached by Marty Gingerich. Marty has been the head coach since 2002. Last year the boys’ team came in 12th at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet and 12th at the 1A state qualifying meet. Returning runners include Jacob Boller, Toby Chen, Jesse Slater, Aaron Hershberger, and John Hughes. They are joined by first-year runners Brian Nchoe, Collin Miller and Noah Miller.
Last year the girls’ team came in 11th at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet and 14th at the 1A state qualifying meet. Return runners include Rachel Geyer, Mackenzie Gutierrez, Sarena Gerber, and Ainsley Shaw. New runners include Julia Boller, Leah Bontrager, and Esther Hughes.
Stay tuned to our website for updates and pictures of both teams as the season progresses.
