IMS 4, Fairfield 2
IMS saw its first non-conference action of the season, hosting Fairfield on a beautiful Saturday morning. IMS opened the game with a slight wind at their backs and after adjusting to Fairfield’s speed, began pushing forward. The IMS backline of Reggie and Kobe Borntrager, Eli Ours and Mitchell Schmieder held the Fairfield forwards in check and the center midfielders, Isaiah Swantz and Gerardo Mendoza began to assert control. Fifteen minutes into the game, Swantz sent a ball into the box where Jacob Boller pushed it towards the goal and into the path of Cole Ours who knocked the ball across the goal line. Six minutes later Ours sent a ball across the box to Louis Etienne for the second goal of the game. At the six minute mark Cody Jones took one of the six corner kicks IMS earned in the first half, and taking advantage of the wind, curled the ball in the upper corner of the goal for the 3-0 half time lead.
In the second half, Fairfield’s decision to take the wind second half nearly paid off as the wind picked up making play more difficult. Still, it was IMS who scored first in the half, this time on another corner kick as Jones sent the ball in and Ours neatly one-touched the ball into the net for the 4-0 lead.
At the midway point of the half IMS made a goalie switch replacing Blake Bontrager who had taken a hard knock on his upper thigh. IMS also got a few younger players in the game while Fairfield began pushing more players forward. Just after the goalie switch, Fairfield took advantage of a the wind, a good bounce and a good touch, notched their first goal. The defense buckled down but Fairfield was able to find the net once more with eight minutes left in the game.
IMS moves to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in conference. IMS has a busy week, traveling to Wapello Monday, hosting Danville Tuesday in conference matches, then hosting #1 ranked Iowa City Regina Thursday.
