Soccer downs Mediapolis

Louis Etienne

IMS 5, Mediapolis 0

IMS stepped onto the soccer pitch for the second consecutive night hosting Mediapolis. Playing a well organized defensive team, IMS struggled to find offensive consistency though dominating the time of possession. Numerous shots went wide or over the goal, while those on target for going in were often gathered in by the goalie. While the IMS offense sputtered a bit, the back line of Reggie Borntrager, Kobe Borntrager, Eli Ours and Mitchell Schmieder held strong denying Mediapolis’ attempts to get the ball into their field of play. As the first half neared its end, IMS finally broke through on the scoring column with an unassisted goal from Louis Etienne.  It didn’t take long for Louis to score his second goal of the night on a cross from Cole Ours, sending IMS into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Jacob Boller, Drew Blauvelt

The second half saw more of the same as Mediapolis maintained a strong defensive presence making it difficult to break through. A little over ten minutes into the half a shot from the west side of the goal rebounded into the path of Cody Jones who volleyed a one touch shot into the corner of the goal to make it 3-0.

Mixing things up a bit and getting young guys in for some varsity time helped in the creation of the last two goals. Moved up front from his central defender spot, it took Mitchell Schmieder seconds to get involved in the scoring as he deftly touched a ball to Isaiah Swantz who buried the ball into the back of the net. John Hughes finished off the scoring with one and a half minutes left in the game on a cross from Will Kolck.

IMS moves to 4-0 and returns to action Thursday, hosting Central Lee in a Varsity/JV doubleheader.
