Three members of the Iowa Mennonite boy’s track and field team kicked off the competitive season by competing at the Central College indoor meet March 16 in Pella. The indoor venue features a 200 meter oval and three of the four field events that are normally competed in the outdoor meets. The large meet also features a shortened order of events. No team scores are kept. Senior Levi Geyer placed third in the 1600 meter run with a personal best time of 4:56.49. Freshman Aaron Hershberger and Junior Louis Etienne both were competing in their first high school track meets. Etienne placed twenty-fourth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.71. Hershberger placed one hundred fourth with a time of 8:24. There were 180 competitors in the 60 meter dash. Hershberger also placed thirty-second in the 60 meter hurdles and forty-seventh in the 400 meter run while Etienne was forty-ninth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.96.
Saturday March 17 five members of the Iowa Mennonite girl’s track and field team traveled to Pella to participate in the indoor meet hosted by Central College. Junior Suzanna Yoder had the highest placings at the large meet. She was fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.89 and eleventh in the long jump leaping 14 feet 6.5 inches. Yoder also placed seventeenth in the 200 meter dash and twenty-third in the 60 meter dash. Junior Ava Hughes made her debut for the team running the 400 meter dash in 1:48.64. Junior Adria Ebersole ran a personal best in the 60 meter dash recording a time of 9.86. Sophomore Ainsley Shaw ran the 3000 meter run in 16:01.85. This was her fastest time ever in the event. Sophomore Sarena Gerber ran the 800 in 3:12.97 and the 1500 in 6:38.43. Both boys and girls teams begin the outdoor season March 27 in Wapello.
