The high temperature was 22 degrees with 8-10 inches of snow on the ground when track practice began Monday February 12. Nineteen student athletes and one coach met in the foyer by Celebration Hall at 3:25 p.m. to begin a daily after school ritual that will continue until the middle of May. These young athletes are striving to become better sprinters, runners, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers. Their competitive season begins March 16 and 17 at the Central College boys and girls high school indoor meets. The season continues as competition moves outdoors the final week of March. The girls and boys will compete weekly, weather permitting, at coed meets through the state qualifier meet May 10. Hopefully some will be competing at the Iowa High School Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines the following week.
Junior Suzanna Yoder competed at the state meet in 2017 placing thirteenth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.55. She returns to the 2018 team. Also returning is senior discus thrower Emma Beachy who sports a personal best throw of 99 feet six inches. She also has state meet experience when she competed in 2016. The girl’s team features a total of eight returning athletes with four newcomers. The boy’s track and field team features two athletes returning from last year and ten newcomers.
