Girls lose to Pekin, Waco

Suzanna Yoder

IMS lost to the Pekin Lady Panthers on Thursday, 29-59.

IMS was led by Suzanna Yoder with 11 points, four assists and five steals. Alyssa Hershberger and Yani Guttierez-Larios chipped in eight points apiece and Hershberger pulled down seven rebounds. Avery Blauvelt rounded out the scoring with a bucket and pulled down six boards.

IMS lost to Waco in the conference shootout on Friday, 38-58.

IMS got off to a slow start and couldn’t seem to find any rhythm on the offensive end. The slow start offensively eventually snowballed into poor defense and IMS went into the locker room down 9-33 at the break.

“We didn’t do much right in the first half and Waco didn’t do much wrong,” IMS head coach Kari Heusinkveld said. “We tried running sets, regular motion, transitioning more and nothing went right. Defensively we weren’t communicating and didn’t do a good enough job of just taking care of one on one assignments. Sometimes when things are going that poorly it’s not a matter of coach drawing up sets or switching up defenses, but rather the kids getting things figured out for themselves. I said a couple things at halftime and left the locker room for them to talk.”

After putting up just nine points in the first half, IMS rattled off nine points during the opening minutes of the third quarter and got big buckets from all five starters. IMS picked up the intensity on the defensive end as well and held Waco to five points through the majority of the third.  he small squad cut into the 24-point halftime deficit and got the lead down to 14 during the fourth quarter, but it was too much to overcome.

Yani Gutierrez-Larios

“It was great to see the girls take ownership, respond and fight back in the second half,” Heusinkveld said. “I think we grew today and that’s big. It was important for us to perform better in the second half and find success on both ends of the floor as we head into regional play next week. I’m very proud of the resiliency we showed in a tough situation.”

Suzanna Yoder led IMS with 19 points, two assists and three steals. Avery Blauvelt recorded her best game of the season with 10 points, one assist and three steals. Alyssa Hershberger added five points and nine rebounds. Payton Hart and Yani Guttierez-Larios rounded out the scoring with a bucket apiece. Hart also pulled down five boards.

The girls start regional play on Thursday, Feb. 8 at Keota. Game time is 7:00 pm.
