IMS squared off against Highland in Class 1A District semifinal action Tuesday in Mt. Pleasant, and came away with a hard-fought 52-38 victory over the Huskies, to advance to the District Final Thursday. It was the third victory over the Huskies this season.
IMS jumped to an early 7-2 lead, prompting a Highland time-out. The Huskies fought back, and IMS led 12-10 after one quarter. Things were even through the second quarter and a Trey Lasek shot beat the buzzer for Highland to make it 24-23 at the half.
IMS made it’s move in the third quarter, scoring the first six points to lead 30-23 one minute into the period. The margin stayed at seven through the quarter, with IMS leading 42-35 entering the final frame. IMS held the Huskies scoreless through the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, and controlled action for the 52-38 final score.
IMS was led by Eli Ours with 15 points. Mitchell Schmieder had a double-double, with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Reggie Borntrager followed with 10 points and eight boards. Cole Ours added eight points, including two treys, and Trevor Leyden completed the scoring with five points with one triple. Cole Ours and Eli Ours each had three steals.
Coach Dwight Gingerich said “it’s always tough to beat a good team three times in a season, but we found that edge and were able to get it done. We received great contributions from each of our guys and were able to get everyone in, always a plus at tourney time.”
The win takes IMS to 20-3 on the season.
