IMS hosted Washington and came away with the hard-fought victory over the Class 3A Demons, winning 65-52, in non-conference action Saturday in Hillcrest Union. IMS started slow, trailing 7-0, prompting a time-out for the home team. From there IMS outscored the Demons 19-5 the rest of the quarter to lead 19-12 after one period.
Washington fought back to take a 32-29 lead with two minutes to play in the half, only to see IMS finish the half on a 6-0 run to lead 35-32 at the break. The third period was even as both squads scored ten points. A Cole Ours triple ahead of the horn gave IMS the 45-42 lead entering the final stanza. IMS then went on an 11-3 run over the next four minutes to lead 56-45. Two minutes later, courtesy of a 6-2 spurt, it was 63-47 with two minutes left.
Mitchell Schmieder led with a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Reggie Borntrager was right behind with 23 points on 9-12 from the floor, with six rebounds and three steals. Cole Ours finished with eight points and five rebounds, and Trevor Leyden recorded five points, five steals and four assists. Eli Ours rounded out the scoring with four points. Caleb Gingerich and Eli Ours led with six assists apiece and Gingerich also had five steals.
Coach Dwight Gingerich said “this was a good team effort in that we fought back after a rough start, we turned it up a notch in the second half and we were able to convert off our pressure, which always aids the cause. We received really good efforts from each one of our guys and our bench was vocal, which always helps us.”
IMS moves to 12-2 overall and next plays Tuesday at Winfield-Mt. Union.
