Girls drop close game on Alumni Night

The IMS girls dropped a thriller on alumni night to English Valleys, 49-54.

After getting off to a slow start, the IMS girls settled in midway through the first quarter and started to knock down some shots paced by junior point guard Suzanna Yoder. IMS withstood two English Valleys runs of 10-1 in the first quarter, and 9-0 in the second. IMS went into the locker room down 22-31 at the half.

“We played well in the first half and I thought the girls did an excellent job maintaining their composure through EV’s runs,” IMS head coach Kari Heusinkveld said. “We needed to make a few adjustments at the half with our interior defense to slow down their top scorer and offensively we had too many turnovers forcing it in some of our sets.” A few adjustments after the break, and IMS would go on to battle in the second half.

IMS found themselves down as many as 11 midway through the third quarter until they started clicking on all cylinders. IMS went on a 19-6 run extending into the fourth that put them on top 46-44 with 4:00 minutes left in regulation. The two teams battled and with 1:00 minute to play EV hit the go-ahead bucket, leaving the home squad down 49-50. IMS had chances to respond and close out the game, but wasn’t able to complete the comeback.

“What an effort from our squad tonight,” Heusinkveld said. “The energy, focus, and confidence from our girls this evening was something we hadn’t seen over the past couple of weeks. We needed a solid performance like this to help get us back on track. The alumni crowd was awesome, we really rode that wave of energy on our big run in the second half. I’m so proud of this group of young women and the fight they continue to show.”

Yoder led IMS with 26 points, six assists, three steals and eight rebounds. Freshman Yani Gutierrez-Larios added 11 points to go with seven rebounds. Seniors Alyssa Hershberger and Avery Blauvelt finished with five points apiece, and Hershberger pulled down a team high 11 rebounds. Senior Payton Hart rounded out the scoring with a bucket.

IMS (1-5) hits the road for a matchup with Louisa-Muscatine Tuesday, December 19.  Tipoff is set for 6pm.
