IMS hosted West Branch in a Hall of Pride Scrimmage Friday, with the Bears defeating IMS by the score of 56-37. IMS led 12-5 after six minutes, and 12-10 after one period. West Branch tied it at 14 one minute into the second period and, following a hard fought quarter, led 25-22 at the half. The Bears then made their move by outscoring IMS 12-4 to lead 37-26 after three periods. The teams played it even through the first five minutes of the final quarter for a 47-37 margin, before the Bears finished on a 9-0 run for the final score. IMS was led in scoring by Cole Ours with nine points, while Mitchell Schmieder had seven points to go with 11 rebounds, and Reggie Borntrager added eight points. Coach Dwight Gingerich said, “This was a really good opportunity to take the floor against a veteran, defending conference champion team, and we saw some good things. We also had a chance to see some things we need to address immediately moving forward. We were able to get everyone in, and I thought each of our guys off the bench played hard.”

An important aspect of the Hall of Pride event is the community service project. Game attendees brought non-perishable food items, which were donated to the local food pantries. Coach Gingerich said, “We are very grateful for the strong community response and thank everyone for their contributions to make this event a success. We thank Norma Wright and Lori Reece for helping coordinate things from the food pantry end of things, as they were very helpful.”

IMS players delivered the items to the food pantries in Kalona and Wellman Saturday morning and had an opportunity to learn about the program from the program directors.
The IMS boys open regular season play Tuesday at home against Lone Tree. The JV boys play at 4:30, followed by the Varsity girls at 6:00, and then the Varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.
