Girls knock off Lone Tree 45-43

Yani Gutierrez-Larios

IMS picked up its first win of the season against the Lone Tree Lady Lions 45-43.

The two teams were evenly matched throughout the first quarter and the home team closed out the first down 10-12. A slow second quarter for IMS and a late run by Lone Tree sent IMS into the locker room down 16-21 at the half.

“I thought our energy was good to start the game, but we had some mental lapses and costly turnovers that hurt us in the second,” IMS head coach Kari Heusinkveld said. “We didn’t execute well enough on some of our set plays and weren’t getting out in transition like we needed to. We addressed those things at the half and that’s eventually what won us the game.”

Suzanna Yoder

IMS settled in midway through the third quarter and with 4:00 a Payton Hart transition bucket got IMS rolling. IMS went on a 12-2 run, behind quick transition buckets from Avery Blauvelt fed by Suzanna Yoder, and a pair of Yani Gutierrez-Larios threes. The home team took a 32-27 edge into the fourth and would never relinquish the lead.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the fourth quarter until Lone Tree knocked down a three with 4:18 left in regulation. This cut the lead to just one at 33-32, but IMS answered with a 9-0 run. The home squad stretched the lead to as many as 10 at 42-32 with just under three minutes to play. The Lady Lions continued to fight and cut into the IMS lead, but a few strong rebounds and clutch free throws down the stretch from seniors Hart and Alyssa Hershberger sealed the deal.

“I’m very proud of the way our team battled tonight,” Heusinkveld said. “It’s been some time since we’ve gotten to enjoy a victory, so to pick one up early in the season is huge for our kids’ confidence. We’ve been working hard and building for years, so it’s great to see the hard work pay off.”

IMS was led by freshman Gutierrez-Larios who recorded her first career double-double with 16 points on 5-6 from long range, and 12 rebounds. Yoder added 13 points, eight assists and four steals. Blauvelt finished with eight points, while classmate Hershberger went 3-4 from the charity stripe to finish with three points and eight rebounds. Hart and senior Angela Marcelino rounded out the scoring with three and two points respectively.

IMS (1-1) returns to action at home Saturday, December 2nd against Wapello. Tipoff is set for 4:30 pm.
