The IMS chapel theme this week was “Worship is Remembering.” We worship as we honor and remember those persons (saints) who have either gone on before us or are still with us as examples of following Jesus. Our guiding verse for the week was Hebrews 12:1 – “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
This verse was read each day from a different version.
On Monday we looked the origins of the holiday of Halloween. Like many holidays, Halloween is a combination of traditions from Christianity and pagan religion. We were encouraged to think of ways to approach Halloween in ways that honor and lift up Jesus.
Our small group time was on Tuesday. We had the opportunity to be in a smaller group setting to talk about persons who have been influential in our lives.
Wednesday’s chapel was a celebration of All Saints Day. On this day, we remember those persons who have passed away but had been a positive influence in our lives. Two persons shared about such people, and then all students and faculty had an opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one who had passed away.
Thursday’s emphasis was on grandparents and those who have been mentors to us. Students were encouraged to invite to chapel their grandparents or significant mentors in their lives. Three grandparents of students were invited to be on a panel to respond to questions about their past and their faith. We concluded with a time of sharing refreshments with our guests.
We wrapped up our week with Friday’s chapel focusing on Biblical heroes. Students were encouraged to talk about a Bible character who has stood out to us as an example to follow. After a time of discussion in small groups, several students shared with the large group about their Biblical character. We concluded by reading Hebrews 12:1 in the Easy to Read version of the Bible.
