IMS garnered its fifth conference win of the season, beating the Falcons in straight sets: 25-14, 25-19, 28-26. “It was nice to get this win at home,” coach Shannon Miller said.
IMS came out with a lot of energy in the first set, led by Alyssa Hershberger who had three kills within the first five points for IMS. The team worked their offense against the Falcons, leading by as much as nine points at 20-11. Senior Raine Hathaway finished out the set with a service ace.
In the second set the Falcons demonstrated they had adjusted to the atmosphere at Hillcrest Union as evidenced by keeping the score close, until 11-7 when strong defensive play by IMS allowed them to start pulling away. Raine Hathaway again earned set point for IMS with a service ace.
The third set saw the Falcons take an early lead at 2-3 which they kept for most of the set. Coach Miller called a time out at 4-10. “We were struggling with staying focused, something which we have been working on for the past weeks,” coach Miller commented. IMS got back into the set after the time out with a side out on an Avery Blauvelt hit which L-M was unable to return. IMS got within one point at 10-11, but the Falcons took advantage of both defensive and offensive errors by IMS. L-M then opened the lead to 13-20. However, a kill by junior setter Samantha Miller sparked IMS which went on a six point run, anchored by consistent serving from Suzanna Yoder. Louisa-Muscatine had set point at 23-24 but was unable to handle another hard hit by Avery Blauvelt. IMS tied the score at 24-24. The two teams traded side outs until senior Joya Schrock landed her serve in, the Falcons returned the ball, but Samantha Miller scored the final point on a backhanded setter dump ending the set and match in IMS’s favor 28-26.
Statistical leaders for IMS were: Suzanna Yoder with eight kills, Samantha Miller with 26 assists, and Raine Hathaway with 19 digs and five aces.
