IMS started conference play beating the Arrows of Wapello 3-0 at Wapello. However, it looked like things might not go so well for IMS, when during warm-ups, starting outside hitter, Mia Graber suffered a knee injury while attacking the ball. “The team could have fallen apart, but instead, they chose to hold together. I was very pleased with how the team adapted to the changes,” coach Miller stated. Avery Blauvelt filled the outside hitter position, while senior Raine Hathaway moved to the libero position vacated by Blauvelt.
The first set started out with a hit by Monet Slabach, causing Wapello to scramble, resulting in the first point going to IMS. Though the Arrows would tie the score several times, they never led. Both Joya Schrock and Avery Blauvelt had serving streaks that held the Arrows at bay, until they tied IMS at 23-23. A Wapello serving error and an IMS kill ended the set for a 26-24 IMS win.
The second set started out much the same as the first with IMS winning the first point, then breaking open the set at 7-3, and never looked back, winning 25-20.
It was the third set, where the Arrows started out strong with Western Illinois commit, Mariah Mitchell, finding the seams in the IMS defense and kept Wapello in the match. With the score 23-22, Coach Miller called a time out. IMS was able to stop the Arrows’ run, and junior Samantha Miller finished out the match for IMS with an ace.
IMS’s seventh player, the student section, made a strong appearance, boosting the team’s confidence and morale.
Statistical leaders for the evening were: Samantha Miller with 21 assists. Rubye Ney, Suzanna Yoder, and Samantha Miller had eight kills each, while Monet Slabach contributed with three kills. Samantha Miller had 14 digs and Alyssa Hershberger had three blocks.
Next up for IMS is Winfield-Mt. Union at IMS on Tuesday, September 5th.
