Cross country teams compete at Fairfield

The Iowa Mennonite boys cross country team placed 7th of nine teams at the Fairfield invitational Thursday at Waterworks Park in Fairfield. Levi Geyer ran a great race. He was third on the 4.7k course in 17:29. Jacob Boller was the team’s number two runner placing twentieth in 19:30.  Freshmen Aaron Hershberger and Gibson Lowenberg finished three and four for the team with times of 22:23 and 23:26. Gibson made a huge improvement in his varsity debut. Sophomore Jesse Slater was the team’s fifth man for the second time this season sprinting ahead of Micah Miller at the line. Gideon Sangare showed a big improvement over his first race at the Early Bird meet. He placed fifty-second in 23:27. Colton Glosser of Pekin was the individual winner finishing in 17:24.

Johnny Diaz placed 59th in the Junior Varsity race with a time of 24:52.

The Iowa Mennonite girls team placed 8th in the eight team field in Fairfield. Junior Mackenzie Gutierrez fought off a strong challenge from Sophomore Sarena Gerber to be the team’s number one runner for the first time this year.  Both runners made huge improvements over their time on this course last year. Gutierrez finished in thirty-first place with a time of 25:15 while Gerber was thirty-second in 25:17. Rachel Geyer and Greta Schrag had their own race to this finish with the junior prevailing over the sophomore in this matchup as well. Geyer was clocked at 27:45 for fortieth while Schrag was forty-first in 27:46. Freshman Kennedy Roth was the team’s fifth scorer placing forty-seventh in 29:55. Meredith Blossom was forty-eighth in 30:17 while Ainsley Shaw was two places back finishing in 34:35. Remi Duwa of Pekin was the individual winner finishing in 20:06. The Mennonite harriers compete next at Knoll Ridge Country Club in North English Tuesday, September 12.
