IMS hosts Early Bird cross country meet

Iowa Mennonite School hosted its Early Bird cross country meet Tuesday on the school’s campus. Three hundred sixty high school athletes representing thirteen schools competed in four separate races. The sky was clear with the temperature in the mid 70s. The Iowa Mennonite girl’s team placed tenth in a field of ten full teams. City High ran well scoring a perfect score of 15. City runners took the top seven places. Washington placed second with 106 points while Cedar Rapids Jefferson was third. Sophomore Sarena Gerber led the host squad placing thirty-fourth in 25:46. Sarena took five and a half minutes off her time from last year on the course. Classmate Greta Schrag also had a great race placing fifty-first in 29:10. Junior Rachel Geyer was one place and twenty-two seconds behind Greta. Freshmen Meredith Blossom and Kennedy Roth both ran well placing sixty-first and sixty-second respectively. Sophomore Ainsley Shaw had the biggest improvement over last year taking seven and a half minutes off her time one year ago. Senior Amelia Morrow of City High won the varsity girls race in course record time of 20:15. Sixty-three runners finished the girls varsity race

IMS had no runners in the girls JV race which had 107 finishers.

Iowa Mennonite placed ninth out of ten full teams in the boys varsity competition. City High won with 16 points followed by Cedar Rapids Jefferson with 47. Senior Levi Geyer led the host team placing seventeenth in 18:45, a career best on the course. Junior Jacob Boller placed forty-third in 21:33, a full minute faster than his time at last year’s early bird meet. Freshman Aaron Hershberger placed fifty-fifth in 22:56. Slater placed sixty-sixth in 24:33. Junior Gideon Sangare placed sixty-ninth in his first cross country race. Sophomore Caden Turnbough of City High won the race in 16:46. Seventy-one runners finished the boys varsity race.

IMS competes next at Fairfield on Thursday, September 7.
