IMS Softball drops one to New London

Infield pep talk

JUNE 12, KALONA.  On a hot and humid evening, the IMS softball team fell 4-14 to the New London Tigers in seven innings.  The Tigers pushed across 3 runs in the first inning, 3 runs in the second inning, and scored in each of the remaining innings.  IMS scored in the first inning on a lead-off walk by Suzanna Yoder who stole second and crossed the plate on a solid double into left field by Avery Blauvelt.  IMS made an attempt to come back in the 4th inning when Mia Graber hit a booming home run with two runners on.  Blauvelt and Calli Shaw had each singled before Graber crushed a 2-strike pitch well over the right field fence.  The rally fizzled and IMS could get no closer.  Graber’s home run was the first of the season for the IMS squad.  Blauvelt went 3-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and a stolen base.  Graber had 3 RBI.  Shaw, Rubye Ney and Yoder each had one hit for IMS.  In the field, Shaw had a busy night handling 9 chances.  Blauvelt played a superb game behind the plate allowing no passed balls and throwing out a very speedy Carson McSorley caught trying to steal.  Graber played a flawless game at first base handling 12 chances without an error.  Rachel Miller was also very busy at 2nd base handling seven chances and making two diving stops and a nice catch on a soft line drive in shallow right field.  Yoder played a solid game at 3rd base.  Hannah Harris took the loss for IMS who is now 1-4.  New London did not have a JV team, so there was no second game.  IMS plays Pekin on the road on Tuesday night.
