Soccer downs #12 Williamsburg on Senior Night

Senior Night: Back: Gloria Villatoro, Cesar Andino, Jim Schlabaugh, Beth Schlabaugh, Ignacio Jimenez, Melitza Jimenez, Paula Yoder, Randy Yoder, Linda Yutzy, John Yutzy. Front: Anthony Villatoro, Juan Andino, Jared Schlabaugh, Steven Jimenez, Cole Yoder, Nick Yutzy.

IMS hosted the #12 ranked Williamsburg Raiders on a beautiful Monday evening, and claimed a 2-1 win. The game followed a script similar to the one which played out Friday in the 2-1 win against Columbus as Williamsburg scored early, IMS equalized, IMS scored to take the lead and then worked hard to preserve the win as the clock ran out.

Despite IMS controlling most of the early possession, Williamsburg was the first to find the net scoring on a breakaway goal twelve minutes into the game. After allowing the goal the IMS back line of Jacob Boller, Reggie Borntrager, Mitchell Schmieder and Cole Yoder asserted itself, shutting down the speedy Williamsburg forwards and limiting their offensive chances. The IMS midfield and forwards continued to chip away trying to find a way to score only to be turned away by the Raiders. As the first half wound to a close Seth Danga got the ball to Isaiah Swantz who turned and hit his shot by the goalie to even the score with one minute left in the half.

In the second half both teams created some chances but IMS continued to put on the pressure. With 19 minutes on the clock, IMS earned a corner kick one of six on the night. Danga sent the ball into the box where Reggie Borntrager headed the ball into goal for the 2-1 lead. Williamsburg pushed more players forward while IMS dug in defensively with the help of Juan Andino and Gerardo Mendoza. Goalie Blake Bontrager recorded six saves on the night and played a key role shutting down the Raider offense in the closing minutes.

IMS will play in the second game which will begin at approximately at 6:45. Conference tournament action will continue Saturday with all games being played at Mediapolis.
