IMS 4, Chariton 0
IMS opened substate play against Chariton in a match played on the turf at Pella Christian. Despite going into a heavy breeze the first half, IMS notched two goals courtesy of Cole Ours. The first goal came after IMS earned a corner kick. The ball went into the box where it careened around until Ours took control and calmly stuck the ball into the net nine minutes into the game. Three minutes later Ours struck again turning a corner kick from Nick Yutzy by the goalie and into the net and the 2-0 lead.
With the wind at their backs Chariton’s long balls were dangerous but the back line of Cole Yoder, Reggie Borntrager along with Mitchell Schmieder and Jacob Boller, and midfielders Isaiah Swantz and Nick Yutzy, did an excellent job of snuffing out the Chariton chances. Those few balls which got through were usually gobbled up by goalie Blake Bontrager before Chariton could get to the ball and get off a shot. In the meantime IMS continued to create chances but couldn’t find the combination to find the net.
IMS opened the second half with the wind at their back and quickly a goal to add to the lead. After some nice combination play through the middle, Ours sent a pass across the box to Seth Danga who one-touched it into the goal. IMS finished the scoring when Isaiah Swantz intercepted a pass and made a run towards the Chariton goal. Swantz rifled a shot from about 25 yards out but as the Chariton goalie got a bead on the ball, Jared Schlabaugh deftly flicked the ball with the side of his foot, leaving the goalie out of position as the ball rolled into the goal for the final 4-0 score. Goalie Blake Bontrager preserved the shutout recording three saves on the night.
IMS moves to 13-3 and will play Iowa City Regina at Regina Wednesday, May 24 with game time at 4:30.
