IMS Soccer Just Short in Second Round Game

Team huddle before the game

IMS 1,  Iowa City Regina 2

IMS played valiantly against #3 ranked Iowa City Regina but came up short in a 2-1 score. Regina came out quickly looking to score in the first five minutes but found the going more difficult than expected. With the wind at their back Regina pushed forward but the back line of Cole Yoder, Reggie Borntrager, Mitchell Schmieder and Jacob Boller held strong. On a counter-attack, Regina was able to find an opening on the back side and find the goal at the 31 minute mark.

The IMS players responded pushing forward behind the hard work of midfielders Nick Yutzy, Anthony Villatoro, Gerardo Mendoza and Isaiah Swantz and the creativity of forwards Seth Danga and Cole Ours. Going into the wind IMS did create scoring opportunities but couldn’t find the net. With six minutes left in the half, IMS was awarded a direct kick from about 25 yards out. Isaiah Swantz rifled a shot which bounced just in front of the goalie before slipping by him to tie the game at 1-1. As the half wound down, Regina pushed forward again creating several good chances only to see goalie Blake Bontrager make two consecutive saves from point blank range. Bontrager recorded 8 saves during the course of the game.

The second half opened with both teams working hard to create scoring chances. Regina looked to score early, but Bontrager continued to play strong in goal coming up with key saves. In the meantime IMS created a number of good chances only to see the ball sail wide, skim over the bar or otherwise be saved. With about 10 minutes left on the clock Regina took advantage of a poor clearance to take the 2-1 lead.

Seeking to equalize, IMS pulled a defender and sent more men forward creating good chances including one where the IMS forward was mauled in the box but the officials saw otherwise and didn’t make the call. IMS pushed forward till the end seeking to equalize but to no avail.

IMS finishes the season with a 13-4 record overall, 6-2 in the conference regular season and as conference tournament champs.
