Golf teams in action

The Iowa Mennonite Boys and Girls golf team headed to Heritage Oaks Golf Club on Monday, April 10 to compete in a conference meet with the host team Mediapolis. Coach Steve Nelson said this, “It was great to have most of our team back together after a busy Spring school schedule. We have not gotten in the practice due to the school schedule and the wet, cool weather, but the team was excited play.”

On the boys side, IMS won the meet by the score of 202-260. Trevor Leyden again led the team as meet medalist with a 47 followed by Drake Brezina’s 49. Roman Slabach and Caleb Yoder rounded out the varsity scoring with a pair of 53’s. “It was great to see Trevor finish the way he did,” coach Nelson said. “He had a rough start, but his putter got hot and kept him in it. It’s great to see one of our guys score well even on a day where he’s not striking the ball the best.”

On the girls side, Mediapolis defeated IMS 202-236. Gretta Rempel was co-meet medalist with a 46 on the shortened par 27 course for the girls. “It was a fun and different meet for the girls playing Heritage Oaks as a par 3 course. It was great experience for our new golfers. Gretta is a competitor and is learning how to fine tune her game to drop a few more shots each time she plays.” Also scoring for the girls were Lara Kliewer, 56, Monet Slabach, 63, and Hannah Peters, 71.

On Thursday, April 6 IMS hosted Louisa-Muscatine at Kalona Golf Club for their first meet of the year. On the boys side, L-M won the meet 207-238 in sunny but cold and windy conditions. Trevor Leyden led the boys shooting a 56. Also scoring for the boys were Bronze Slabach, 60, Adrian Gonzales, 61, and Tanner Thrapp, 61. The girls did not have a team score. Competing individually for IMS were Gretta Rempel, 57, and Lara Kliewer, 76.

Coach Nelson said this, “It was a tough meet missing so many of our golfers due to the touring choir being gone, but it was good to get that first meet completed, set a bar, and now see how we can keep improving.”

IMS returns to action with 3 meets next week, Monday and Tuesday at Kalona Golf Club and Thursday at Columbus(Cedarcrest).
