“But, soft! what light though yonder window breaks?”
It’s Juliet, of course, who Romeo sees.
Last week, students in English 1 staged the famous balcony scene between Romeo and Juliet at various locations inside the school, reading selections of lines from Shakespeare’s drama and filming the results.
Shakespeare’s language proves challenging, but reading the script multiple times, discussing it in class, viewing professional productions, and even trying to stage bits of it helps engage students in the enduring power of the words.
The chance to present the real world attitudes of the characters in contemporary settings serves to highlight the relevance of Shakespeare’s 400 year old play on the negotiations of love.
And staging variations of scene around the school turns out to be quite fun.
