The IMS boys basketball season came to a tough end at Mid-Prairie High School, as Lisbon defeated IMS in the Class 1A District 9 Championship 64-59 on Thursday, February 23. The Lions stepped up and converted down the stretch to take control of the game late, overcoming a 53-50 deficit with six minutes to play.

IMS led 14-13 after one quarter and 35-31 at the half. A Nick Yutzy three beat the buzzer to give IMS the lead at 49-44 at the end of three quarters. Lisbon took the lead at 54-53, and IMS would lead one more time at 55-54 before Lisbon took the lead for good. A steal and lay-in by junior guard Cole Ours cut it to one at 60-59 with one minute remaining, but Lisbon went into delay and hit free throws to seal the win.

Yutzy scored 21 points, including five triples, and had five assists, three rebounds and three steals to lead the way in his last game in an IMS uniform. Junior Reggie Borntrager scored nine points with four rebounds, and seniors Finny Lackender and Cole Yoder had eight points apiece. Ours finished with five points and team-highs of seven rebounds and six assists, junior Mitchell Schmieder had four points and sophomore Caleb Gingerich added two points to go with three assists. Coach Dwight Gingerich said, “we played so well for much of the game, and I felt really bad for our guys it got away from us late. Credit Lisbon, they hit some big shots and really stepped up the pressure at both ends down the stretch. This was truly a team through the season, and it’s always hard to see the season come to an end when that’s the case. Our seniors have been tremendous and set a positive tone for our team all season long.”

IMS finishes the season at 17-7 and says goodbye to five seniors, including Drake Brezina, Adrian Gonzales, Finny Lackender, Cole Yoder, and Nick Yutzy.
