The IMS volleyball team went 1-3 at the Wilton Tournament on Saturday. IMS started out playing Mt. Pleasant strong in the first set. There were several lead changes, however, IMS lost 18-25 and subsequently lost the second set as well 13-25. “We played hard in the first set, but lost energy in the second set. Keeping consistent, positive energy during a match is something we continue to work on,” noted coach Miller.
Second up for IMS was Winfield-Mt. Union (WMU) whom IMS had just lost a close match to on Thursday. “We were ready for another try at the Wolves,” coach Miller commented. For the first time in three years, IMS won a match at this tournament, beating WMU in straight sets 25-20, 25-16.
The third and fourth teams IMS faced were the perennial strong teams from Durant and Wilton. IMS put up a valiant effort against fourteenth ranked 2A Durant, losing 15-25, 17-25. “I think we surprised Durant a bit with our defensive play. We were able to consistently dig both their cross-court and line shots, forcing them to mix up their play a bit,” Miller said. Finally, IMS was never able to overcome the 15th ranked 2A Wilton Beavers tough serving, losing 9-25, 9-25.
“Though it is a bit disheartening to come out of a tournament 1-3, I think the experience we gain playing ranked teams better prepares us for our upcoming matches,” Miller stated.
Statistical leaders for the tournament were: Alijah Beatty with 23 assists, Rachel Miller with 23 digs, and Suzanna Yoder with 10 kills.
