IMS Volleyball Wins One in SEISC Pool Play

volleyballrgb-300x300IMS competed in conference pool play at Mediapolis High School last evening.

IMS started the evening by playing the host school, 10th ranked 2A Mediapolis. The team started the set off playing the best volleyball they had all season. Mia Graber had a key block right at the start boosting IMS and jolting the Bullettes. In the next series of play, Suzanna Yoder had an acrobatic dig off an IMS overpass which Mediapolis’s middle hitter tried to put away.  “This level and pace of play really lifted the team’s energy,” coach Miller noted. IMS took a 7-0 lead over Mediapolis. However, the Bullettes settled down and their larger, stronger, offense was able to overcome the plucky IMS defense, winning 14-21, 9-21.

Next up for IMS was WMU. This was the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with each having one win over the other.  WMU beat IMS at home 3-1 in a regular conference season match, while IMS defeated WMU in a tournament match at Wilton, 2-0.  With IMS not able to get in sync with serve receive, WMU won 12-21, 14-21.  Suzanna Yoder spurred the defense with 14 digs. “Tournament play can be very emotional, and the team that comes with their game face and steady play is the one that prevails. After our spirited play against Mediapolis, we had trouble settling down and passing,” coach Miller stated.

Last up for IMS were the Hawks of Central Lee.  IMS was able to re-establish their serve receive with a passing average of 2.11, led by Raine Hathaway passing at 2.75. Behind their passing, IMS was able to establish a more aggressive hitting game compared to the Hawks.  Both sets see-sawed back and forth, with Central Lee causing trouble for the IMS defense with tips to the center of the court. In the end, IMS’ overall stronger game prevailed, winning 23-21, 21-18.

Statistical leaders for the evening were: Allison Moreland and Alijah Beatty each with three aces, Avery Blauvelt and Suzanna Yoder with six kills each, and 35 digs for Suzanna Yoder

Next up for IMS is a home match against Lone Tree on Thursday Sept. 29th.
