June 6–IMS 1  Highland 11

IMS opened its home season, contending with perennial conference powerhouse Highland. Highland jumped on the board with three runs in each of the first two innings.  IMS answered with one run in the bottom of the second when Alyssa Gonzales led off with a single and scored on Suzanna Yoder’s double. Highland scored three more runs in the third and one in each of the fourth and fifth innings. IMS wasn’t able to come up with a run in the bottom of the fifth, so the game ended.

Hannah Harris pitched the entire game, giving up eight hits and striking out five. Jess Bender and Rachel Miller, playing first and second base respectively, played solid defensive games  with Miller recording three assists without an error and Bender handling five chances flawlessly. Avery Blauvelt threw out a runner attempting to steal second. At the plate, Yoder went 2-3 with two doubles and one RBI.  Calli Shaw went 2-3 with a single and double. Harris and Joya Schrock each singled. IMS left eleven runners on base.  Coach Kathryn Ney commented, “We put pressure on Highland throughout the evening, but were unable to come up hits when runners were in scoring position.  We are working on being aggressive at the plate with runners on base.”

IMS lost the JV game 5-4.  Joya Schrock pitched.
