Drake Brezina and Reggie Borntrager pitched a combined no-hitter for IMS in a 6-3 win over Cardinal Tuesday night in Kalona. Brezina gave up zero hits in 5 ⅓ innings while striking out 10 Cardinal hitters. Borntrager pitched the final 1 ⅔ innings allowing 0 hits while striking out four to earn the save for IMS. IMS got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Cole Ours and Drake Brezina both scored for IMS. IMS was able to load the bases in the second inning but was unable to push any runs across keeping the score 2-0 after two innings of play. IMS scored three more runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a two RBI single by Brezina, and a RBI double by Noah Bruns. IMS added one more run in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Blake Bontrager to make the score 6-0. Cardinal came back with three runs in the sixth inning before Reggie Borntrager struck out two Cardinal hitters to end the inning. In the top of the seventh Cardinal was able to get runners on first and second with two outs bringing the tying run to the plate. Borntrager struck out the final Cardinal batter to end the game giving IMS the 6-3 victory.
“We played a very solid game tonight. Drake and Reggie both pitched very well for us and were both able to come up with big strikeouts when we needed them,” said Coach Danny Hershberger. IMS was led at the plate by Cole Yoder who was 4-4 with a double. Noah Bruns went 2-3 with a double, Nick Yutzy and Jacob Schmieder also had hits for IMS. IMS is 4-7 on the year and will play Thursday night at Danville before returning home to face Highland on Friday at IMS.
