In the first round of sub-state play IMS hosted Mid-Prairie and after a hard fought game came away with a 2-0 win. Much of the play in the first half occurred in the middle of the field as both teams sought to maintain possession and find a way to score. Defenders Isaiah Swantz, Cole Yoder, Mitchell Schmieder and Jakob Schmidt were able to thwart the potent Mid-Prairie counter attack much of the half allowing the IMS midfield and forwards to push forward. Stymied much of the half by the Mid-Prairie defense, IMS found the goal with less than a minute left. Anthony Villatoro crossed the ball to the left side of the goal where Jacob Schmieder knocked the ball to Cole Ours. Ours took the ball off his chest and volleyed his shot into the corner of the goal for the 1-0 half-time lead.
Play in the second half was in many ways a repeat of the first half. The Mid-Prairie counter attack created good opportunities but the IMS defense continued to find ways to stymie the runs. Mid-Prairie nearly equalized on a head ball off a direct kick, but goalie Blake Bontrager calmly snagged the ball out of the air. Sixteen minutes into the half, Cole Ours making a run into the box was knocked down as he headed towards the goal. The official blew his whistle and awarded IMS the penalty for the foul in the box. Anthony Villatoro calmly stepped to the spot and sent his kick sailing by the goalie for the 2-0 lead and win.
IMS moves to 7-9 on the season and faces Iowa City Regina at Regina, Wednesday, with game time set for 4:30.
