IMS 2, Cedar Valley Christian 0
IMS broke a four game losing streak picking up a 2-0 win over Cedar Valley Christian at home Tuesday evening. In a rather miserable first half of play IMS escaped two clear goal scoring opportunities from Cedar Valley to end the half 0-0.
IMS improved its speed of play and possession in the second half resulting in more scoring opportunities. Five minutes into the half, Jacob Schmieder beat a defender down the left side, then crossed a ball into the box where Anthony Villatoro turned the ball into the corner of the net for the 1-0 score.
Cedar Valley responded with more offensive pressure but the back line of Jakob Schmidt, Cole Yoder, Mitchell Schmieder and Gerardo Mendoza kept one of the leading scorers in 1A in check, preventing him from getting off a decent shot. IMS continued pushing forward, this time down the right side of the field. Villatoro beat a defender to the touch line on the right side, then sent a precise cross into the box. Nick Yutzy timed his run perfectly, leaping to head the ball by the diving goalie for the 2-0 score.
As time ticked down Cedar Valley sent more players forward but the back line was able to hold. On one scramble in front of the goal, IMS goalie Blake Bontrager fell as he tried to retrieve a ball. As the Cedar Valley shot rolled towards the goal. Mendoza was able to clear the ball off the line to preserve the shutout.
At the end of the varsity game, IMS recognized the two seniors on the team, Jakob Schmidt and Jacob Schmieder. Both played all four years and both have been important contributors to the program’s success.
IMS is 6-8 overall and finishes its regular season Thursday at Williamsburg.
