The Iowa Mennonite boys and girls golf teams started off the 2016 golf season with a pair of conference meets against Wapello at Kalona Golf Club (April 7) and Mediapolis at Heritage Oaks (April 11). The girls had only three golfers thus not having a team score for both meets, however there were some highlights for the girls that did compete. Payton Hart led IMS in both meets with scores of 72 and 77.
On the boys side, an experienced Wapello team easily defeated IMS at Kalona Golf Club by the team scores of 192 – 219. Junior Roman Slabach led the IMS team with a 49, despite the cold and windy conditions. Mediapolis won a close meet by the score of 223 – 226. They were led by returning SEISC conference champion Charles Jahn’s outstanding one-over par 38. Competing with only five players, IMS was a little short-handed, but almost pulled off the victory. They were again led by Roman Slabach (54) followed closely by freshman Trevor Leyden (55).
Coach Steve Nelson had this to say. “It has been a challenging spring with the cold and wind. The boys and girls competed hard and stayed positive despite the less than ideal scoring conditions in both meets. I’m looking forward to having Gretta Rempel at our upcoming meets and to see how all our young golfers improve. We are just going to get better as we compete more and get more consistent. It’s going to be a great week of weather as we prepare for the upcoming schedule.”
IMS is back in action Friday against Winfield Mt Union at Kalona Golf Club.
