The Iowa Mennonite School boys and girls golf teams competed on Friday, April 15 and Monday April 18. On Friday IMS competed against a good Winfield Mt. Union team at the Kalona Golf Club. Warm conditions led to an enjoyable afternoon and fantastic support from IMS friends and family, but the windy and dry week led to difficult scoring conditions. The boys lost by the score of of 217-174 and the girls lost 329-221.
On Monday the teams traveled to Keota for a non-conference match-up with Keota and BGM. The boys shot their season low of 199, but lost to Keota(196) and BGM(172). Roman Slabach was runner up medalist with at 43. The girls won the meet and shot their season low of 240, defeating Keota(245) and BGM(no team score). Lara Kliewer was runner-up medalist with a 54.
Coach Steve Nelson had this to say: “Friday was tough, but things changed on Monday. Eight of our eleven golfers shot season lows. We are still a young team and some of the hard work is paying off. There were lots of highlights on Monday including some fantastic shots I got to witness by the girls. The girls really played well overall. It was a rewarding day as a coach to see Lara and Roman receive medals and to see the excitement out of our athletes after they competed well. Hopefully this sets the tone for the second half of the season.”
IMS returns to action next Monday, April 25 against Louisa Muscatine at Cedarcrest Country Club.
