The Iowa Mennonite girls track and field team posted seven season best times and several near season best times in less than ideal conditions in Wayland Thursday at the 1A state qualifier meet. It was cloudy, it drizzled and at times it rained during the meet yet the competition continued.
The field events began at 4:00 pm with the long jump and shot put. Rachel Miller placed fourth with a horizontal leap of 14-01.25. This is less than two inches shy of her best ever. Grace Belin also nearly equaled her best jump with a 12-10.5 jump to take the eighth and final medal in the event. Emma Beachy heaved the shot put 19-07 at the same time the long jump was competing. Later she nearly equaled her best discus throw by throwing 82-0 in the finals of the event. She placed eighth.
Riley Schmieder and Liza Zanozina were the team’s first athletes on the track when they ran the 3000 meter run. Both ran season best times. Schmieder finished in 11:28.36 for third place while Zanozina was sixth in 16:04.98. Grace Belin was next up for the team racing her best 100 meter race of the season in 15.10 for thirteenth place. Rachel Miller and Schmieder ran the 100 meter hurdles. Miller was nineteenth in 19.62 and Schmieder was one place behind in 20.14 which is her best time of the season. Demi Brezina has been trying a new event. Thursday she ran the event for the third time finishing in 2:33.36 for third place which is her best yet. Avery Blauvelt was ninth place in the 800 finishing in 2:52.28 which is her best time ever. Later she reappeared on the track for the 1500 nearly running her fastest time. Riley Schmieder did run her fastest time of the season finishing in 5:24.01 for second place. A quartet of Miller, Belin, Jenna Boller and Demi Brezina ran the 4 x 100 meter relay in :58.81 for fifth place.
No events from the team automatically qualified for the state meet. Only event winners in the 1A state qualifier meets are guaranteed an entry to the state meet. There are twelve state qualifier meets in 1A. The twelve winners qualify as well as the next 12 best performances across the state. Congratulations to Riley Schmieder for qualifying in the 3000m.

Five male athletes competed for Iowa Mennonite School in the 1A state qualifier hosted by WACO. Drake Brezina gave the team a great start with a huge personal best long jump of 19-11 to place fourth. A bothersome hamstring prevented him from trying to improve on his amazing first jump. But that first jump was good enough to qualify Brezina for state as one of the next 12 best qualifying jumps. Danny Lam tried the event moving over from the long jump in the previous two meets. His best jump was 17-04. Lam came out on the track to blaze a hot path in the 100 meter dash dominating his heat with a personal best time of 12.33. Jory Conrad also ran his best time in the 100 meter dash of 13.83. Conrad also ran in the 200 meter dash in a personal best time of 29.08. The distance medley relay was the team’s final event. C. Bai, Lam, Brezina and Kirby Shetler won their heat in 4:04.99 placing seventh in the event.
