Tuesday April 21 the Iowa Mennonite girls track and field team scored 28 points to place sixth in the eight team field at the Wildcat Relays in Durant. Riley Schmieder had a great night winning the 1500 meter run in 5:31.35 and placing second in the 800 meter run in 2:40.1. Both were season best times for Schmieder. Riley also anchored the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Demi Brezina, Avery Blauvelt and Alyssa Gonzales to a victory in 11:34.86. Rachel Miller ran her best time in the 100 meter hurdles to place third in 18.58. Brezina also recorded a personal record of 29.20 in the 200 meter dash placing fourth. Emma Beachy had her lifetime best throws in both the discus and shot put. She broke 20 feet in the shot put and threw the discus 79 feet two inches for seventh place. Liza Zanozina also recorded personal records in both the 1500 and 3000 meter runs. Avery Blauvelt ran the 1500 in 6:26.02 to lower her personal record.
“It was a windy day which made the event more challenging. The meet also went quickly so the athletes did not have much time to recover between events. The girls competed well considering those challenges,” coach Marty Gingerich commented. Both girls and boys track teams compete next in Wayland at the Ekstrand Relays April 30.
